So is everyone planning on doing LCHF ketogenic plan for life?

I’m done with carbs. I don’t want that 145lb back

I keep it simple, though. I don’t do anything crazy, like try to mimic my favorite carby dishes (not that there’s anything wrong with that - I just prefer to keep it as simple as possible so it’s easy to stick to). As much as I could probably be disciplined enough now to go back to carbs, I see no compelling reason to do so. Just the opposite, the science seems to point to plenty of compelling reasons to avoid them as much as humanly possible.

I think a lot of people put far too much weight on the whole “Keto Debate”, like whether it’s sustainable or what not. I mean, at the end of the day, all we’re really doing is cutting out carbs. I feel it’s absurd to call it “dangerous” or “unsustainable” when it’s really just cutting out a single non-essential macronutrient.

Of course, I’m only 2 years in. Who knows, I might switch off to something else if the science DOES prove that there’s a better way for me to stay slim with minimal effort. But for now, this is what works for me and I have no plans to change it.

Unless I start feeling terrible or some new science comes out that somehow completely refutes the health/longevity benefits of keto, yes, I plan on doing this for life. That’s not to say I will be perfectly strict keto every single day but it will be my primary dietary lifestyle.

I can’t imagine what such a way might be, but that doesn’t mean we won’t find one. But anything better than keto is by definition going to be fucking batshit cocksucking damned amazing! :bacon:

(G. Andrew Duthie) #24

This. All of this. :grinning:

(Karl) #25

Until then, I’ll keep eating those ribeyes!

Hey! Save some for me! :cut_of_meat:

I’m figuring that at least part of the keto lifestyle will stick indefinitely, as it should. For instance, sugar needs to be gone, forever, regardless of whether I’m keto or not.

Some of the other stuff might get varied. There will likely be times of greater and lesser carbs. There will be times when my fats and proteins get adjusted, some depending upon my personal physical needs, some depending upon season and availability of local grown food. How I fill my macros may vary also as to what is easily available to me, i.e, sometimes I’ll be more heavily plant based and other times more animal based.

I figure I’ll roll with things over time. I am appreciating the keto experience and continue to improve health overall. I’d like to continue the trend while still continuing to enjoy good food. I am figuring that short fasts may also be thrown into the mix, likely just for good maintenance.

When I was 15 years old, I thought I would be a vegetarian for life. Nope. So who’s to say what I’ll think even just a few years from now. I’ll keep an open mind and remember the experiences of being keto and how it’s worked for me so far. If something comes along that is actually better for me at the time, I’ll evaluate it at that point.

(Jane) #28

For me, yes. Except for the occasional social or professional situation and then I’ll go right back to keto.

It’s the easiest WOE to lose and maintain my weight and I just feel better.

My husband joined my WOE to support me even though he wasn’t overweight. He does all the cooking when I am home (I travel a lot for my job) so it was a big help to me early on.

He discovered a lot of his joint pain and sinus headaches went away with keto, so now he wants to be a lifer also. He misses carbs much more than I do and indulges more when I am gone. He has never been insulin resistant so he likely burns it all up anyway since it doesn’t cause him to gain weight.

But even indulging he eats a fraction of the carbs he used to.

(Carol O'Carroll) #29

Yep, Keto/low carb for life.

(Nancy) #30

My original plan was a permanent switch to keto. That is still my ideal but falling off to me will only be adding a few more green veggies and maybe a piece of fruit now and then. I seem to be a carb sensitive and have to stay low. I will try to maintain keto for health issues most of the time. I am truly addicted to this feeling of not craving as much food and don’t want to go back to a point that would change that.

(Vanessa ) #31

Yes, some form of Keto, lfhc, IF, maybe an occasional round of paleo, but natural, real food with a focus on high, quality fats and periods of fasting is my goal.

Dr. Daniel Pompa is a real fasting advocate with lots of good advice. He also advocates (his term) “diet variation” - his argument is that if you stay in ketosis continuously, your hormones will adapt and effectiveness will go way down. If you look up “pompa diet variation” on YouTube and watch his “Dr Dan Pompa Diet Variation” video - he’ll explain how ancient cultures were forced through dietary shifts due to seasons, famine, travel etc. His conjecture is that these greatly differing food environments forced continual hormonal change - and that it was good for us.

@carl @richard I wonder what the research really demonstrates
I would love to see a podcast on this topic or a variation that addresses the same concerns

(TJ Borden) #33

I’d love to see science supporting that theory. If someone want to try to sell me on the idea that it’s beneficial to eat pizza and fries every once in a while, I’m listening.

(Ron) #34

I occasionally question why I quit eating something that I loved (until I learned about it) and have to remind myself “and how has that worked out for me”, so I can quickly dismiss that infectious thinking.

(Alec) #35

I am here to stay, BUT, I am keen to experiment/learn/understand whether there are benefits to a small amount of keto cycling using more fruits and veg. Maybe I am stuck in old thinking, but I am still thinking that eating those natural foods must have some benefits.

I think much depends on someone’s IR status. I am sure I am still somewhat IR, but if I can cure that, then maybe more fruits/veg could be net positive and not net damaging.
Cheers
Alec

I’m in for life, also. But like you, I am open to considering new science. Watched the youtube vid from Dr Pompa that @Lesliemont recommended. Wow, gave me a lot to think about.

#37

The way I look at it is from a longevity perspective.
I strive to be pragmatic and not dogmatic.
I look at keto as a powerful toolbox within a lifestyle that promotes health optimization.
I will do that which I think will promote longevity, wether it is keto or something else.

My gut feeling is that I will at least be doing a lifestyle that results in me being in ketosis cyclically or more than 50% of the time.

It might be effective to not be in ketosis constantly.
But I do believe it is highly beneficial for me to be in ketosis more that not.

I think this might vary a bit from individual to individual and also over the lifetime of a single individual.

But I will probably be doing some form of LCHF ketogenic plan to some degree throughout life,
unless I get a longevity evident reason to do something different.

#38

Not at the moment.

As in, it seems good, but when I tried for 1-2months now, it seems… gimmicky. As in, it is not bad, but I cannot say it is very good either.

(Richard Morris) #39

There isn’t any research that I know about that shows that any deleterious hormonal drop due to a long term ketogenic diet - only beneficial ones like lowering insulin, inflammatory cytokines, cortisol.

You can expect TV doctors and Weight loss gurus and Coaches to all have their own (mostly ketogenic) diet that they brand with their own branding and tweak with carbnites, or once a week cheat days, or carb cycling, or high protein loads, or low protein, baroque organ cleansing protocols, or even Paleo diets.

IMO the beneficial mechanism of all of these is likely the degree to which they approximate nutritional ketosis.

(Wendy) #40

My plan is to do this for life. Will I do it perfectly every day. No. I know I will occasionally eat something not keto. Or have a “cheat” day or meal but my normal diet, as long as I have a say in it, will be this woe.
I’m over 50 now so that only leaves me with 30 or 40 more years of delicious bacon.
