He’s not gonna convince me with a steak argument. I’m a vegetarian, lol.
Question about protein shakes
Sorry missed the bit about you being vegetarian… but can’t you just eat more food? and if its only 100 cals then is there any point… sorry I just don’t understand the rationale behind drinking instead of eating… feel free to ignore me completely…
@MarkGossage But it’s not “instead of”. I think that’s where the confusion is. I drink it like I would a glass of milk with a meal, except it’s not milk. It’s not a thick shake, it’s just one 30g scoop of powder mixed with water. As a vegetarian I’m looking for ways to up my protein. The first container was given to me and I liked it so much that I bought another one off amazon. But then I spent some time on this forum and picked up the negativity towards protein powder. But now I’m thinking that mindset is probably directed at meal replacement shakes; as you said, we should be eating whole foods. Since it’s not a meal replacement shake I’ve decided not to worry about it.
So double your one meal a day size…? replace the shake with food…
That’s what I mean…
I’ve typed out two replies and deleted both because I don’t want to pick a fight. I don’t think you “get” that this is in addition to a regular meal, not a substitute.
Nothing to fight about… we simply have different opinions… I’m simply suggesting you eat more in the meal and dump the shake… you want to have the shake… go for it…
As mentioned above, the main reason protein powders are frowned on is because they aren’t a “whole” food, and foods should be eaten and not drank. That being said, since you’re a vegetarian, and you won’t get most of your protein via animal products, I’d say the protein powder might be a net positive in your case. Better to get your protein in, even in less-optimal circumstances, than to risk being protein deficient.
They ‘get it’, Sharon! But they don’t like it. So “no soup for you”!
I love protein shakes and wish I could drink them, but they not only kick me out of ketosis, they can keep me out for some time. Only you will be able to tell how they affect you, and be aware that may change as you progress. In the meantime, you do you
Yup, because it’s not all whey. The higher end brands will give you the breakdown, some don’t. I wouldn’t worry about the whey in there either way.
