When I made it myself, there was a slight taste if I didn’t filter it good enough. The commercial made stuff is filtered much better and basically has no taste at all, as well as (nearly) no smell when heated up. One of those times when industrial processing is just better than what we can do on our own.
Way back when I was a teen and worked at McDonalds we had to filter the fryers daily. They could start off really bad, color and old oil smell, the machine vacuumed the hot oil out and ran it through multiple filters and then you’d put the nozzle into a holder and it would just continue to circulate through the filters over and over, I think it was like 15mins and when you flipped the switch to pump the rest back into the fryer it looked just like brand new oil, and no more old smell. When I was rendering a lot I tried replicating it different ways, never worth the time or money vs just buying a 5lb bucket of the stuff already done.
