Ketostix test positive, keto breath, clarity and energy, but keto mojo test LO

(Josh) #1

Hey guys I’m new to keto and this forum. I have run up on some issues that’s making me frustrated and a little bit annoyed because of the results I’m seeing. I started keto March 11, 2019, it’s been roughly 3 weeks now. My body has adjusted and I feel the boost of energy and the clarity and not being hungry and my significant other tells me my breath smells like acetone. So I’ve been keeping track lately via Ketostix. I’ve progressed from being nothing to the furthest dark maroon purple whatever color it is. Now today my keto mojo came in the mail and I tested it 3 times. All showed Lo reading. I am confused and same time pissed off. I’ve been restricting my carb intake to 25G per day, some days I go over but here’s the thing I have a very demanding job that requires me to walk 5 plus miles daily and carry heave things and run around, in other words I’m an Aircraft mechanic so my job is demanding. I am lost for words with why I’m positive on ketostix and negative on keto mojo but also positive for all the signs that I’m in ketosis. Any help would be amazing thanks

Ketone Levels Help Needed

Best advice I can give is don’t worry about it.

It took me five months to register on the blood monitor. Seven months to lose weight. Just be patient.
This is a way of eating, not a diet. I am 12 months and not yet fat adapted.

Glucose and ketones in your blood are available fuel. They come and go, rise and fall constantly. If you detect ANY ketones in your blood, even a small amount, then you are probably in ketosis. Acetone in your breath is the exhaust gas of fat burning. So if your wife really is detecting acetone in your breath, and not just trying to be supportive, that confirms that you are burning some fat. There is a thread on this forum that discusses using a cheap breathalyzer to measure acetone in the breath. It works well enough to confirm your metabolism is actually burning fat.

You’ve been on keto for 3 weeks and in ketosis for maybe two weeks. Don’t expect miracles and you won’t be disappointed.

I’d also like to add that ketones in the blood are UNUSED ketones … and with the amount of exercise you’re getting, my guess is you are using them as fast as you’re making them. I’d consider that a win. Also, what time of day did you test? My blood level is always highest at night, lowest in the morning… as overnight you’re not eating anything and your body is burning all the available ketones, so blood level is low.

I’m getting workout daily. I’m a gym rat as well. So the keto diet for me is just to see if it fits my lifestyle and if I like it and so far I love it. But that would totally make sense. Thanks this clarifies so much. I took the test at night, 3 hour after my last meal. Dinner pretty much

I’ve had my mojo for 3 weeks now, and nothing has registered above .4. When it gave me the Lo signal , I thought that it meant under .5, but I have had readings of .1 and .2, so I gather Lo means “I found Nothing”. I prefer to think in terms of how much my body is efficient at creating and burning ketones, that it leaves Nothing in my blood stream. Ya that’s the ticket, I’d go with that for now. I have another monitor that showed me at levels of up to 2.0 in my early days, but that dwindled down so much that I thought I would buy a monitor that was created just for Keto. That idea hasn’t worked out so far, but I have an attempt at my first 48hr fasting, since I got the mojo, so we shall see during that. I’ll let you know.

Okay glad I’m not the only one with some what the same issue and please keep me in the loop I’d love to know how it works out for you

If your carb intake is under 20 g/day and you are breathing in and out, your liver is virtually guaranteed to be be making ketones, so don’t sweat it, especially since all the other symptoms are positive.

Like weight, your ketone measurements are not a measure of health. It is a data point amongst many, many others.

Well, I didn’t make my 48 hour fast, but I did 2 24’s, that’s fasts not beers, :). Keto mojo reading before eating, after a 20 hour fast, was Lo again, but I had one keto test strip left for my old monitor and it read .4. Today after another 20 hrs fasting it read Lo again, but 1 hour later, after eating it read .2. I had the same result with BG readings, 5.8 before dinner, and right after 5.0, which should not be happening. I’m afraid this mojo is not very accurate, and I am eating pretty much as close to zero carb as I can get. I’ll keep testing this week to see how it goes, I do OMAD Monday to Thursday and 2Mad the rest of the week. I"m not hungry, and I am still losing weight. I should mention that I tend to go in and out of ketosis once every couple of weeks the last time being 6 days ago, so no complaints on my progress at all. How has yours been working ?

Twice my keto mojo had a LO reading. In both cases I felt like maybe I didn’t have quite enough blood from the stick to feed it, did it again – and it gave me a number.
