Ketogenic diet - failure

#21

Generally my ketones level were between .5 and 1.0. Sometimes would get up to 1.5. More often around 1.0. After I began taking jardiance they jumped dramatically. I even had one episode of borderline ketoacidosis at level 6.0 to 7.0.

Having to measure food is a drag honestly. And I travel a lot. That said, it seems highly unlikely that I would be eating such a high level of protein that it would cause such high levels of glucose and especially triglycerides. I’ve done my reading and my podcast listening. I know what not to do. . . After all if I was falling for the usual “hidden carbs” issue then I would not have been in ketosis for 1.5 years.

I will revisit the fasting thing. I was doing it for a while but just lost momentum. Even so at this point I’m skeptical that that would be the answer in light of what all else is going on.

#23

Be careful with Jardiance and increased ketones. Euglycemic (normal blood sugar) ketoacidosis is a potential side affect of that medication.

I’d definitely have a chat with your doctor about your glucose and ketone levels.
I’m wasn’t saying that you are falling for hidden carbs. I’m just thinking that it might be helpful to see what your food trends are compared to your glucose. Also, any stress (from travel) that might effect things? Even if it doesn’t really feel stressful?

I echo OgreZed - how would eating more carbs do anything but make your situation worse?

I am also surprised Virta isn’t ordering more tests to figure out what is going on. Glucose tolerance test, fasting insulin, etc. I assume your liver enzymes are normal?

#26

Yes liver tests are normal. So normal tests except A1C/glucose and triglycerides. The peptide test was only done once, but it was normal.

The “Occam’s razor” (simplest) conclusion is: my body tissues are extraordinarily resistant to insulin. Or I somehow am not making enough insulin. That’s for the glucose.

I really have nothing regarding the triglycerides. Other than bad genes. While it’s true that weight loss results in more blood fats (triglycerides) circulating from lipogenesis (and the reverse), this has been going on long enough that that seems unlikely.

Also, responding to an earlier question. I have a fairly significant amount of lean body mass. At basically 225 lb my waistline is 36.

#27

My suggestion at this point would be an oral glucose tolerance test with insulin levels to find out more about what’s going on

(Jane) #28

Not sure why someone would test ketones daily for a year and a half but some like data

What are your typical glucose numbers for the 0.5-1.5 ketones you see and what time of day are you testing?

#29

Virta instructed me to test ketones2x/day.

Before I went on Jardiance, morning glucose was about 160 (sometimes 180) and evening about 110.

(Jane) #30

Oh that is high for being on keto a year and a half.

I hope someone in the medical profession helps you figure this out.

@SkyStars
Many years. I am not going to return to the SAD. Just seems unlikely that keto will fix my metabolism . . . would have seen more improvement by now. exercise, not really. Work/travel schedule is a challenge.

According to drugs.com a potential side-effect (emphasis mine):

Metabolic

Frequency not reported : Appetite increased, anorexia, diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia, gout, hyperuricemia
