And this was the reason that people were recommending drinking the hard stuff over wine and beer, six years ago.

This is because, like excessive serum glucose, ethanol is a toxin. Both can be fatal when taken in quantity. On the other hand neither ethanol nor fructose stimulates insulin secretion, which is good; nor do the calories they contain register on the appetite hormones as food, which is bad, because that leads to overeating.

Glucose, of course, is toxic in quantity, whereas even small amounts of ethanol and fructose can do damage, especially to the liver. We like the short-term toxic effect of alcohol on the brain, which fructose lacks, but they both affect the nucleus accumbens in the same way, which is why the both cause addiction in the vulnerable.

@PaulL Excellent points.

I figure the way I use alcohol won’t hurt me. I take a shot in a tall glass of sparkling water with dinner, I enjoy it. And later, when the enjoyment wears off, it helps me fall asleep. It fills two slots at the same time, and used like this, it’s really cheap, a bottle lasts a long time and as diluted as this, the quality isn’t really noticeable, so I can buy cheap stuff.

You’ve piqued my interest … a shot of what?

#26

Vodka.

I like Fit Vine wines.

From what you’re all saying any amount, even the smallest of wine is toxic.

#29

Alcohol IS a toxin, it doesn’t mean it necessarily harms us… Exercise makes free radicals too  And lifting tears muscles  And they are even GOOD. Well wine is allegedly good too if used well… I just want to say that having some negative effect doesn’t mean the thing itself is to be avoid.

No one ever can persuade me that my tiny booze is negative  It is very slightly positive, I feel free, that is a tiny positive mental effect… And it hardly does harm due to the amount of frequency

(I drink about 18ml vodka a month and a few drops of rum but still :stuck_out_tongue: I do drink.)

Do you regularly monitor your HbA1c glucose to make sure you’re not diabetic or prediabetic?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #31

Well, not precisely. Wine is no more (or less) toxic than the hard stuff, it’s just that wine contains more carbohydrate, which we want to avoid on a keto diet. Myself, I stopped drinking long before going keto, so it hasn’t been an issue for me.

And by the way, I should mention that people on keto generally find that it pays to go easy with the drinking; they tend to get hit harder and faster by the alcohol they drink. So be a bit careful.

The good thing about alcohol (unless you are an addict of course, then too much is never enough) is that the less you use, the less it takes to produce the desired effect. People have asked me how I can even feel the small amount I use now. You’d be surprised.

Why does alcohol not have an ingredient list?

The simple answer for why alcohol gets away with not needing to disclose ingredients in alcohol is that it’s not regulated by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) .

This makes no sense to me.

(Joey) #34

Well, if alcohol is a toxin, then perhaps it’s neither a food nor a drug?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #35

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not generally regulate foodstuffs and beverages that have been used since time immemorial. Also, for historical reasons, the regulation of alcoholic beverages falls under the purview of a different agency, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (BATF), which I believe is still part of the Treasury Department.

Bota Box makes a wine that has 3 carbs, I did not have any issue weight wise with having 2 glasses. Fit Vine is another no to low sugar choice. And Malbec is a dry red that is low in carbs. A small glass of any of these may be fine if you are fat adapted. Keto is becoming more main stream so those who are naysayers either are 100% compliant at all times or just haven’t looked into it.

(holistciRN) #37

Toxic from a medical point of view. Alcohol is viewed by the body as a toxin, so therefore the body gets rid of it first. Any food you consume while also consuming alcohol will generally be metabolized after the alcohol, potentially having a negative effect on you losing weight.

(Joey) #38

Funny to see these two posts in succession… whenever I’ve bought a box of Bota wine, my head turns it into buying Botox. :wine_glass: (all things in moderation.)

(holistciRN) #39

that’s because I was answering two different people. The op asked for types of wine and the second is just facts. but, yes, I agree! lol

Y’all are making want to drink…back button…back button. :yum:
