Thanks. Yeah, you may be right. But I do OMAD most of the time so I try to get all my nutrients in at once per day. I plugged all of that into Carb Manager and it came to about 22g net. Seemed to be ok. Even if it went to 30g I was USUALLY still losing. Things are beginning to move again, however. I’m at 217.8 this morning. I have no problem giving up foods if they are screwing me up. My goals ARE more important to me than food.

This was the trick for me. I stalled for six months. Turned out i had reached equilibrium with the amount of food I was eating. I calculated my macros and turned out I was eating maintenance for my current weight. I’ve cut my cals, and made sure I’ve been getting plenty of my cals from fat. All of a sudden I’m dropping weight like crazy again. I’m still eating dairy and nuts even.

Just a quick update…I’m down to 216.6 lbs today.

Great, it looks like you figured it out and got the scale moving again =-).

Keto is NOT about calorie restriction. If a person attempts to restrict, they in effect are reducing one of the macros or all.

One of the many problems with defining it as calorie restriction is that it is tempting to reduce the highest calorie thing which is fat at 9 calories per gram compared to 4 for protein and carbs. What ends up happening is fat is reduced in favour of carbs and/or protein.

Another pit fall is that calorie restriction can produce hunger and we all know that most of us cannot go for long battling hunger. Bad decisions can ensue.

In my experience it was a case of under eating and adding a good quality fat (coconut oil) seemed to be the nudge that my body needed.

The same thing happened when doing OMAD. That in effects, reduces calories with only one meal to eat. I made the mistake of doing OMAD day after day over a few months. At first I lost and was very happy. But over time, I regained those lbs. and was right back where I started with OMAD. I learned that the body will adapt. I also realized that constantly under eating brings about the same adaption.

Moral of the story is that I need to mix it up with the amount of nutrients.

But whether someone gains or loses weight (i.e. stored body fat) will be based on calories consumed.

Carbs are already restricted, in order to stay in ketosis. And proteins shouldn’t be restricted below what the body needs. So fats are really the driving force for how many calories someone will eat.

The best a macro calculator can do is guesstimate the TDEE and the lower limit for grams of protein. It cannot guesstimate how many grams of fat need to be eaten because it cannot know how much of the TDEE is being satisfied with stored body fat. Ideally, hunger should be what determines how many fats to eat.

The main point is that fats shouldn’t be eaten purely for the sake of meeting some (irrelevant) guesstimate of a fat macro. At best, it’s an upper limit. But I agree it shouldn’t be restricted to the point it creates a hunger.

For me, a big advantage of keto is that caloric restriction is easier because I’m no longer ravenously hungry all the time. With keto, I am eating fewer carbs, fewer proteins, and fewer fats. Without feeling hungry and deprived, like in all other diets I’ve been on, which is what always led me to cheats, then to binges, then back to the same old bad eating habits.

The two primary keto mantras I have:

  • “Minimal carbs. Adequate proteins. Fats as needed (for satiety).”
  • “Eat when hungry. Stop when full. Mostly meats.”

This is def true for some folk and obvi those folks should avoid.
For some though -me- it works a treat. I’ve eaten once/24h since the start and have 0 problems shoveling in adequate amounts. My loss was swift, steady and sustained. Now at 114lb. I love the gluttonous indulgence of having a massive amount at a sitting. I am a small female by the way

Hey, if it’s working for you, go for it. If it helps for you to look at it from a caloric standpoint, go for it. I think I am understanding what you are saying now, basically, that you use caloric restriction in your fats to achieve weight loss. And I guess I would agree with that. I think of it more in terms of grams than calories, though. (Although I don’t really do that anymore either lol) But, for me, the number of calories doesn’t matter based on your statement here we agree together on:

The only thing I would differ on is the “mostly meats.” For me, I would say, “Mostly vegetables.”

Weeel. So much for the “stall”. I’ve been dealing with a stomach bug (and the obvious symptoms that shall go nameless but are nonetheless obvious lol) since Sunday. I started this post a week ago?? For the past day or so I hit 212.5 lbs. And this, after beginning to eat again…so I assume I will gain at least a couple of pounds when I get back to normal but all I can say is: WOW. I must say it would be nice to hit Onederland before the end of summer…it would be nice. :)

Quick update…stomach bug gone, now constipation. Fun fun fun. But the expected regain of weight did not happen. I am steady at 210 lbs on Keto/OMAD (except for this weekend). I am in uncharted waters now and unsure what to do…leptin reset? Zero carbs? Strict Keto? Carnivore? Or just carry on with Keto?

Keto for life, why would you want to go back to SAD after Keto? It is the best!
