Keto pup on Thanksgiving day?

Some of these list items are clearly bad, i.e. turkey bones. Well, duh. But what of the skin or the fatty parts of the bird? Our dog doesn’t crave onion, garlic, so that doesn’t matter in our home. But butter? Are they really bad for poochie?

and here’s an entirely gratuitous photo of our pup, Holly.

Good advice and a great looking dog! We have cats only. We’re cooking chicken today so they’ll get their share of bird meat.

Some dogs throw up if given too much fat. My sister’s rule is, “Yes, you can give it to the dog, but then you have to stick around until 3 a.m. to clean up the mess.”

Also, many dogs are prone to pancreatitis. We had a dog that died of pancreatitis after ingesting too much turkey fat.

Our dogs have always gotten their own Thanksgiving plates of food each year, but yes, we do try to watch what all they get. But have also never had any issues with anything we have given them.

THAT I understand, and I’m prepared since I’m the one on cleanup duty, anyhow. Throwing up and gagging on bones are two different problems, however, one being distinctly fatal.

As a vet tech the day after Thanksgiving was one of the busiest of the year.

The best is that almost everyone said, verbatim, "My dog jumped up and got " fill in the blank. Nobody would just admit they gave their dog some delicious left overs.

Thanks for the reminders. Lovely coloring on your puppy.

It’s not necessarily untrue. We have learned to be very careful about making sure food is inaccessible to my sister’s Lab. (The cats are a problem, too.) It was particularly difficult yesterday, with the amount of food we made. :turkey:

When I was a kid, my grandmother, who was four-foot-something tall, used to babysit for various families in the neighborhood. She developed a rule, however, about not sitting in houses where the dog could reach parts of the ktichen counters she couldn’t, lol!

Chocolate is really bad for dogs.
Every dog I ever had, loved butter, had to make sure it was out of reach.
Some dogs do like beer, but never saw one go for hard liquor or wines.
Twine and bread doughs are no brainers.
Limited skin and gravy should be ok.
I’ve never seen a dog that would move to reach a grape or raisin or the corn on the cob either.

No opinion on the other items.

Here is the result of my own N=1, giving Holly turkey fat and skin:

All kinds of cleanup this morning.

Now THIS will really give you a laugh! A couple we know posted a pic while celebrating Thanksgiving down on the Texas Gulf Coast. It was a brown pelican attempting to swallow an entire steak it had just stolen straight off their grill!!!:rofl::rofl:
