Keto for eyes?

(Todd Allen) #21

I wonder how it would work out to have one eye with a near lens and the other with a far?

(Robin) #22

I know they do that with contact lenses and a lot of people are happy with that.

Then you will have what I have naturally. I’m near sighted in my left eye and far sighted in my right.
I wear glasses so it brings everything into a better focus and improves my depth perception but I can function without them. I do find that driving long distances will cause me some eye strain and I really don’t do well driving at night without my glasses.

Yes! That’s also an option he gave to me. But of course you don’t really understand all these different nuances and how they will really impact you day to day until you’ve had the surgery. I wasn’t sure I could get used each eye being different, but now I wonder if it might have been better than what I chose. He said a lot of people like doing it that way.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #25

A number of people do that, apparently. It was not an option in my case, so I haven’t really looked into it.

Also, I suspect that keto can prevent or delay the worsening of cataracts, but reversing them? Not likely, so far as I can figure.

I would imagine the lack of sugars, grains and fructose would help, but I’d be curious if keto could reverse cataracts. If it’s iron overload/inflammation in the eye, then getting more retinol, copper, boosting ceruloplasmin etc might offer a chance of healing. I do know people who have thrown away their glasses once they go back onto the butters and livers. And I know a few who did cure their cataracts by addressing the iron issue.

I was keto for 5 years and intensified to carnivore 2 years ago. Keto did nothing that changed my eyes, but carnivore did very quickly. I had been nearsighted and had to wear glasses since I was a kid. My glasses seemed to stop working for me more and more annoyingly. I did a lot of night driving and it was particularly bad at night. One night forgot my glasses, and noticed that I could see much better without them! I went to my eye doctor, and he told me I needed to stop wearing glasses. My eyes were just fine without them! I had always had a mild astigmatism, and I do still have that. I’m 70 years old and have an annoying cataract in one eye, and a tiny one started in the other eye. I’ve read about so many people whose cataracts improve on the carnivore diet that I’ve decided to delay surgery in my bad cataract eye for 2 more years to give my diet a chance to heal clear out the glycation. If it doesn’t work, I’ll go ahead and get the surgery. But the eye can’t clear out debris or inflammation or glycation quickly since there’s so little bloodflow in our eyes, so I want to give my eyes some time. The studies on lowering the glycemic index for eye health all say that these diets have been found to “slow or reverse” glycation and inflammatroy diseases of the eye.
