Insulin resistance, HOMA-IR calculator

I found a HOMA-IR calculator that will show how insulin resistant you are (providing you have your fasting insulin numbers). I had never had a fasting insulin drawn until I saw a naturopathic doctor. It boggles my mind that most MD’s only rely on fasting glucose numbers when treating patients. I have learned so much since starting on keto in October 2017(I have been a registered nurse for 14 years) and I am dumbfounded that mainstream medicine does not treat root cause only symptoms. Pathetic!
When I started my insulin was 15.5 and fasting glucose 102, after 90 days insulin 11.3 and glucose 87. HOMA-IR now 2.4, need to get it below 1.9 to not be resistant.

Will you go off piste for Christmas?

Thank you for sharing this! I didn’t know there was a number that tells us if we are insulin resistant. Since my health insurance makes me pay for lab work, I will refuse any tests that don’t give me information that is important.

Thanks for this. I also found this one: https://www.mdcalc.com/homa-ir-homeostatic-model-assessment-insulin-resistance

I just had mine done and was trying to find the formula Richard described in the podcast Optimizing Nutrition with Marty Kendall and did a search of the forums.

My numbers? 5.0 BG and Insulin 9.8ulU/ml so my HOMA-IR is 2.2

It’s a complete disaster that 99% of the doctors we rely (relied?) on for our health are completely ignorant of real causes and markers of metabolic issues. (apparently we can only rely on our own research now)

When I started keto (March 2017) I weighed 440 lbs and the only test done was fasting glucose. It was 102. After 3 months on keto I knew enough to request an HbA1c which was 5.9.

After 11 months of keto, I’ve lost 93 lbs, my HbA1c is 5.5, and my fasting glucose is still 100. This time, armed with knowledge I’ve gained here, I insisted on a fasting insulin test that came in at 8. That gives me a HOMA-IR score of 2.0. I would give anything to know what my numbers were 1 year ago.
All we can do is try to pay it forward as best we can.

Question? Should you test fasting insulin and glucose at the same time? Had to pay for my insulin test. At 11.5 and fasting glucose is 72. HOMA-IR is 2.0.

They should do it at the same time, one blood draw.

Thanks for sharing the links to the calculators.
I’m on Keto for 4 months now and just got my blood test results:
Insulin uIU/mL (mU/L) : 12.384 Glucose (mg/dL): 92 (and this results are after 15 hours of fasting…). HOMA-IR is 2.8.
I’m looking forward to seeing the numbers in a year from now!

Me too. I have HOMA IR of 3 at 90+ days keto and IF. Wondering what it would have been in December when I was 20 lbs. heavier and still eating carbs?

And from my doctor, nothing but flack that I requested tests that she said were unnecessary. I had to go around her to get them. “If they were appropriate or important, I would have ordered them for you.” Time to get another doctor, I guess.
