Inability to cope with heat

That sounds REALLY frustrating - and typical of post-midlife females in general and esp in those who are metabolically deranged.

I’m not sure if you mentioned if you’re IR or not, but typically midlife and older women have complex hormonal profiles related to the stress hormone cortisol, in which case fat is very slow to recompose, the body is on alert to be a super-grandma if needed basically (regardless of whether one has offspring). Reducing cortisol levels may really help (natural ways of doing exist - Ginger has been well studied as a great reducer of cortisol, and there are other ‘adaptogenic’ herbs and spices with similar action). Also, possibly getting some labs to see if you’re struggling with thyroid issues or EBV may be validating.

And, sometimes visceral fat recomposition may not affect measurements much, if one does not have diastasis recti (meaning, your abdominal wall isn’t separated). Also, the fatty liver healing is critical for physiological health, and occurs in the earliest seasons of keto. And, lean mass restoration of muscle and connective tissue and a better functioning liver that makes the complexion look radiant are no small potatoes!

Wishing you cool breezes.

Morning Virginia,
I’d been supplementing iodine but stopped after thinking it was perhaps causing the heat issue. The weather has cooled down a bit here so I’ve started taking it again.
Cheers,
Mary

I really appreciate your detailed, thoughtful posts, Mary.

Ginger is on my list to get. Thanks for the suggestion.

Second or third summer in a row. I don’t know if it’s ketosis related or not, but I am having problems making it to work. I don’t have air conditioning in my apartment or my car. The heat just makes me very sick. It’s not super hot, maybe 85 in the apartment, but it just floors me.

Hi Mary, been home from Egypt a few days now. Yes, I coped with the heat much better than I expected and I definitely attributed this to my keto WOE. Most days it was 40C and sometimes more. I couldn’t have coped prior to KETO with post menopause in those temperatures. Had a great time, enjoyed the food; lots of fish, meat, salads and veggies available. Perfect keto food. Drank more wine than normal but on the whole “was a good girl!”. Came home to find after a couple of days that I’d dropped another 1 kg so now at 10kg loss in total. A miracle to have lost anything whilst on hols. Did need to drink about 4 litres of water/day. Ali

Morning Ali! Thank you so much for the update. I’m thrilled for you that you managed well in those extreme temps. I think we started keto around the same time (mid-Jan for me) but it’s clear that you’re waaay ahead of me re fat adaptation. Which might be related to my heat issue - I don’t know.

Anyway, things are getting so bad in that department that I’l be seeing a naturopath about it. He’s a big proponent of keto, according to his website, which is the main reason for choosing him.

Wish me luck!

Hi Mary, I started properly 12th February but had been gradually reducing for a couple of weeks prior. Do hope your naturopath can help you. Keep in touch and let me know how it goes. Ali x
