That and a sauna?
I gained 6lbs during a 7 day water fast
Brian, my experience is similar. Was blaming myself for “doing it wrong,” but you may be on to something.
@corduroyew not going to comment on the water but I was interested in how much physical work you do a day. On an EF your HGH increases so my thought is some of your gain could be from muscle. Do you notice any change?
I think if you really want to see actual weight loss on a scale from a fast you have to do some planning:
- Record all food and liquid intake for 5 days (your playbook)
- Fast 5, 10, 15 whatever days and slowly break your fast one afternoon
- The next morning pick up your 5-day playbook and run it exactly again
Contents of stomach should be about the same, hydration level should be about the same - the only thing missing should be about a half a pound of fat per fasting day on the scale.
Anything else is “water weight”, changes due to electrolyte issues etc.
(Women should probably time this to avoid any known bloating times for other reasons.)
Actually an app on my phone for drinking is a great idea - I am having issues with drink to thirst… because my thirst signal kicks in WAY WAY after I should have already drank something… anything. Its always been an issue for me, not something that developed just with keto - just now I am trying really hard to be more aware of it - yet… I poured a glass of water at work at 9am this morning, it was still full when I left at 4. oops…
Goes looking for said app!
That is a very good idea. I’m going to try that when I do another extended fast next month.
The body knows when it is thirsty, it tells you when it wants or needs to drink water.
Drinking water if your not thirsty, that’s when the trouble starts with water weight and flushing out the time sensitive water soluble nutrients that should not be flushed out.
Purposely drinking water when your not thirsty does not mean “staying hydrated.”
Physical exertion activity levels (known time of?) = different rules (thermal\heat) pre-hydration is necessary?
One thing I noticed, before, during or after intense physical exertion in martial arts training is when I drank too much water right before, afterwards or during, I would get incredible stabbing pain in my right side (gall bladder, liver area), that means I was drinking too much water when adrenaline levels were/are high (shaky hands, hard to write with a pen etc.). Just need a little bit (not too much) of water to drink.
It’s hard to tell if I had much muscle gain or not. I never put on muscle bulk and I’m always quite toned. Snuggling with me is like snuggling with a bag of rocks. I don’t do any weight training or anything else that would indicated to me if I’m actually stronger. Perhaps during my next fast I’ll trying some push up and pull ups just to see how many I can do and then after the fast see if that number has changed.
