That is neither an answer to my question nor my (or many others) experience but whatever.
Hunger after a year on keto - fat not satisfying
Well just to throw another n=1 into the mix, I find neither fat nor protein satiating in isolation. A combo of the two however (ie pork belly) - job done!
I’m not a scientist or clinician. I wasn’t theorizing, I was speaking from personal experience. I’ve conducted experiments on myself, so I know what’s true for my body. Liquid calories (protein shakes or fat drinks) don’t keep hunger at bay as long as solid food. If I eat a head of cabbage or pound of cauliflower I will not be hungry.
All foods (including fat) raise insulin, it’s a matter of degree. Drinking a cup of coconut oil is not the same as fasting. At home insulin testing kits aren’t available yet, so I use a glucometer as a proxy for my insulinogenic response to meals.
What veggies are you eating? How about doubling your veggie content with dinner. Similar to fats, foods high in fiber cause more satiety due to similar mechanism. Your stomach takes the most time to empty fats and fiber which is subsequently absorbed in the small bowel. I’ve found that eating a big salad every night before I dive into my main protein or fat source causes me to eat less of the fat and protein. When I eat low carb veggies like spinach, kale, broccoli, etc., I typically do not have to concern myself with “overdoing it” on carbs or calories and my fullness sensation lasts for hours.
I’ve found something similar. Fat is very satiating but only when bound up in some cellular structures. I don’t find fat in drinks, fat bombs made with oils, fat in a broth, or even butter or high fat cheese very satiating. On the other hand, if I fry up some pork fat, which I estimate at 90%+ calories from fat, a few bites will hold me for 6+ hours.
For me the most satiating is a good animal flesh protein/fat combo. I’ve talked to my butcher and told him I’m interested in cuts that are about 50% fat. Nobody else wants them so they are normally waste. He basically sells me for peanuts the very cuts I desire the most. I’ve done the same with the fish seller. They keep the fish bellies for me. Even skin-on salmon was starting to seem too lean, but now I add a chunk of belly and it’s perfect.
Hi Mark,
I’m basically at my goal weight 92.5kg down to 72kg.
I’m eating the same amount as what I have been eating the last year, that’s what surprised me
Karen, I’ve been Keto for a year, I’m fat adapted
I eat a lot of protein with my meals.
I feel I might have more weight to loose (maybe another couple of kg’s).
I dont have a 6 pack, but im trying to get my BMI (I know dont trust it) into the normal range (under 25), at moment I’m at 25.05 as per my latest results
Possible idea. ‘Most’ meals have 2-3 servings of vegies with it.
Ie Brocolli and cauliflower or salads with avacado
