How would you respond?

4-part video playlist that my favorite ketosis YouTube channel put out last January. It is meant for beginners and explains things well. They are very popular because they speak to the layman and do not overcomplicate things.

Where’d you start. Everyone was a newbie once upon a time.

If I wanted someone to do what I was doing, i’d direct them to the book. If they didn’t want the book, I’d direct them to the dumbest version of it I can summon:
Limit carbs <35g Net
Prioritize the Protein… always start with protein in every meal.
Don’t worry about the fat… eat ribeye

But really, that doesn’t work for folks.

If you look back to where you started, maybe it was with Dr. Fung, maybe with Phinney and Volek, maybe with a Youtube video or a website or a podcast… That’s where anyone you want to follow should probably start.

I don’t invest hopes in other people. Some absurd number of folks fail any diet they undertake and a similar number fail to maintain. If you and I are two who have reached goals and maintain for a couple years, you and I have beaten the odds and it means there are likely 38+ people who have either failed to lose or failed to maintain. So, I can give them all the materials and all the advice, and maybe I’m tipping their odds 5% in their favor. Against 95% fail to lose/fail to maintain.

Maybe phrase it that there’s moderation and flexibility with all the “other” foods they eat…just not carbs. And if she’s like me (struggling to eat low fat all my life), she might appreciate finding out that she can add back in some of those “guilty” pleasures without feeling guilty.

Does she watch YouTube videos? Maybe direct her to your favorite YouTube person or one that you think is simplest or fits her lifestyle best. I like Casey Durango because she’s an older woman who kept things very simple. Watching someone like Thomas Delauer is ok, but what works well for a younger guy doesn’t always work so well for an older woman and sometimes, they really just don’t understand the difficulty and frustration.

Funny … it took me a long time to remember where I started. Unfortunately, it was with my aunt, when I was about 5. She had to go on insulin, I was needle phobic. My mother explained that she had diabetes so she “couldn’t digest sugar”. I thought, “ok, so if I eat like I already have diabetes (i.e. no sugar), I’ll never have to worry about this (needles).” So maybe I invented keto, ha ha. I strayed away from my no-sugar roots, but the idea was already sensible in my head when I needed to shed pounds.

If you’re looking for a book that spells it all out get her Atkins New Diet Revolution book. It’s so easy to follow and has a work book that goes with it so you can write down everything and answer questions like did you get x amount of water. Did you take your electrolytes today. Plus, right next to it on the shelf is a book with the macros in every food under the sun. If you just want to throw the info her way, might be an easy place to start. She should invest in learning it if she wants it to stick.

Then she can get into the nuances of the ketogenic lifestyle, etc.

AI found this useful when I started to get educated about the basic WOE.

Kib, I think Eric Westman has a very simple keto plan. Check home out.

This seems pretty obvious but did you point her to the dudes podcast and the forum. The forum gets a bit complicated but the dudes shows(especialy the early ones) do a good job of breaking things down

(Running from stupidity) #30

Yeah, I’d get them to listen to the first 20 or so if possible. It seems like a lot, but it’s good info, well presented by Richard.

I have not prevailed with my T2D parents but their mental faculties are suffering so it’s hard to communicate anything.

But I’m not going to give up without trying.

I’m trying the positive and simple angle:

I have been telling my family “I no longer eat bread, rice and pasta, I have replaced them with vegetables …” “and I’m not afraid to put butter on top”.

And Instead of cereal with milk I have good old fashioned “bacon and eggs”.

A very easy formula to follow.

But they still lack modification to bother with it. They need to know the evils of sugar and wheat.

And hence the negative angle:

I told them sugar is not sugar, it is HCFS in great quantities and wheat is not your grandma’s wheat it has been so cross-bread and mutilated (mutogenisis a precursor to genetic engineering), basically it’s grass.

This seems to be getting more attention from them.

Next: I’ll just try to get them to just eat bacon and eggs for breakfast instead of taste or cereal - i.e. simply guide them step by step … but I work and it’s hard to squeeze it all in

I am not sugar I have succeeded at all.

I have been telling my family “I no longer eat bread, rice and pasta, I have replaced them with vegetables …” “and I’m not afraid to put butter on top”.

Very easy to follow. And Instead of cereal with milk I have good old fashioned “bacon and eggs”.

The point is I use meal examples, everyone can follow that.

But the hard part is getting people to drop their favourite sugar additions. No ice cream. No “treats”. No bread.

The reason I ditched bad food is because it is toxic. It is a clear and present danger.

Sorry to be selfish here but what did you do about the hair loss?? Getting nervous over here

(John) #35

my wife would like to know the answer to this as well

(Midge Julian) #36

I see you’re name so as a female wondering you’ve managed the hair loss. Are you someone that just puts a hat on, is it really not a big deal for you, or have you sought out / found suitable
hair replacement?
