How Valid are Blood Ketone Readings?
Great post @DeeCS Former t2D.
It really is not the numbers that are important. It is the foundation curiosity that leads to action that is important. The tools we have (yes, even weight scales) allow us to learn more about ourselves. Knowing more about oneself creates a greater comfort of fit inside what we have got.
No. Ketone bodies are partial metabolites of fatty acids. Think charcoal as a partial combustion product of wood. Some cells of the body do better metabolising ketones than fatty acids, which is why the liver produces ketones in the first place, whereas others prefer to metabolise fatty acids from start to finish.
The healing the mitochondria idea is not far off base, however, since glucose metabolism produces reactive oxygen species that damage the mitochondria, so a ketogenic diet does permit the mitochondria to recover from that damage. But it’s more a result of stopping eating the poison than a result of eating the better food.
Thank you Paul. So, my take away from this should be that the ketones are fuel for mitochondria, but autophagy (the state where you have low blood sugar and high ketones) allows your body to recycle broken mitochondria and replace them with new?
