High fiber diet and keto

(Edith) #21

For me, fiber slows down the process which is why I get better formed stools. No fiber and the food goes right through me.

I don’t think we are helping the OP.

(Polly) #22

I think we are helping, to the extent that we are letting the OP know that we are all different and have different tolerance levels. All of us need to find out what works for us and then run with it.

(KM) #23

So to speak.

(Polly) #24

:joy: “run” as in “operate” rather than as in “sprint”

(KM) #25

Actually I meant run as in " get the runs". :poop:

I’m like Paul. Fiber CAUSES constipation for me. And IBS. And many more problems.

My favorite fiber study:

People who kept on their high fiber diet defecated once every 6.83 days. Holy crap!

(Edith) #27

Pun intended?

(Bob M) #28

Absolutely. :grinning:

I think, and maybe this has been discussed, that there can be a big difference between naturally occurring fiber and a fiber supplement. Pre keto, fruit and other fibrous plant matter, especially that with plenty of water naturally in it, would just create what I’d term “normal” movements, every 1-2 days, not runny, not hard. Taking psyllium would create a Lot of bulk, and sometimes “scratchy baseballs”. They sure felt that way when leaving, anyhow. Ouch.

For me, a mostly carnivore diet = less bulk and less frequency, but comfortable evacuation with stool ranging from “well formed” to a bit sticky at times.

Makes sense to me. Of course my body is like it usually is and just doesn’t care. But it doesn’t care if I eat zero fiber or a ton of it either. I had times where most of my fiber intake came from pure fiber (psyllium husk and bamboo fiber. I have some apple fiber too, it actually has a tiny apple flavor/smell  I still barely ever used the poor thing), not because I thought fiber is important, I never did if I remember well but I like baking, no matter my woe and they may come handy there. Nothing changed but it’s me.

Mostly carnivore is ghost wipe for me! That’s neat. Stickiness requires plant carbs, apparently (just like noticeable farts). My frequency is high on every diet because my body isn’t a collector. If it’s a tiny ball like a rabbit’s so be it (but it likes that anyway. my results are very rarely on the Bristol scale). I wonder what would happen with zero coffee (or cocoa as that seem to trigger it too)…

Its all good, im enjoying the back and forth.

I’d be curious to know the reasoning behind your hypothesis.

Nothing very scientific. Actually sort of extrapolating from Robert Lustig. If fructose in the absence of fiber is problematic, then fiber that isn’t whole, and bound up with water, might also be problematic, albeit for different reasons. - One of which would be similar, which is the amount of x, be it fiber or fructose, in one piece of fruit is vastly different than the amount in a “serving” of fruit juice or fiber. I think our bodies were designed to deal with disparate elements in a conjoined state, not teased out and served up in 10x magnitudes.

I also recall Lustig himself carrying on about the idea that fiber that’s been ground to dust is no longer serving the purpose.

Here’s my understanding of it. The purpose of the large intestine is to extract the water from what’s left over after the small intestines are done with it. If you don’t have much fiber to ‘hurry things along’, you end up with really solid stools and the straining that results. Your large intestines pushes whatever is in it along and if there’s not much to push, you end up with the stool staying in there longer. I personally do better with more fiber. It also can delay gastric emptying and help you feel full longer.

That said, do what works for you!! That’s always the bottom line. We’re all an n of 1. I’ve recently discovered Konjac noodles, which are 100% fiber. They taste good and replace the part of my plate that had the carbs (rice, noodles, etc.) I get the noodles from Amazon. I get to eat my staple, enjoy the taste/mouth feel, and have regular non-greasy stools as well.

Ah, that makes sense.

I was going to mention that last point. It’s why he advises strongly against shakes and smoothies. And fruit juice is deadly because it has no fibre at all. That means that the fructose in it hits the liver all at once, and it also means that a glass of juice represents a larger number of whole fruits than we could possibly eat at one time.
