Help! Keto day 1 and I’m already failing!

Gotta agree here. If the idea of “oil and grease” repulse you, you’re not likely going to succeed eating this way. I’m not even sure why you set out to try this with that (really important) aversion. Why subscribe to a lifestyle that turns you off from the get-go?

Crying for an apple? That is food addiction!

Have to agree, does not sound like it is for you. Why would you drink orange juice? Honestly ever, let alone on a keto diet. An orange on some other type of diet I can understand but juice is simply sugar water with vitamins.

If your plan is to lose 15 lbs and then return to your old way of eating, I would not waste my time.

However, even if you do decide to return to your old diet, a couple of suggestions, eliminate sugar anyway. Have whole food carbs but eliminate the sugar, it is not healthy. Eliminate the juice, that is sugar even if it fresh squeezed picked off the tree. Eliminate all seed oils in cooking. Soy, canola, corn, cottonseed and sunflower. Contrary to popular opinion, they are not your best option and neither is anything made with them. Start reading labels, you will be amazed at how many foods are made with them. I suggest this even if you hate keto and never want to eat this way

So I’ll say a few things here.

  1. i am not trolling, i have a genuine respect for the keto lifestyle, but i set out on the keto journey after a recommendation from a friend and virtually did no prep or much research before.
  2. i grew up eating fruit and vegetables. Every morning before school id have eggs and a piece of fruit and then instead of a sugary snack or treat, i would have fruit or carrots. When you have fruit in your diet all of your life, it is hard to cut it out - so while i wasnt actually crying, the thought of having to cut something out that isn’t bad for you is upsetting. I think its pretty rude imply that i have a good addiction based on that.
  3. i didnt think that a fat based diet would include so much oil. I thought of cheese and avocado and nuts for example, but i didn’t understand going into keto that everything calls for lots of oil. All the recipes call for tons of oil. So it was ignorance on my part, i hadnt done enough research going into it to understand what was in store for me.
  4. i only drink 100% pure orange juice with no added sugar. Fruit is recommended by doctors, and full of vitamins and I’ve had fruit in my diet my whole life.

I sincerely appreciate your tips and tricks and the replies I’ve recieved. I have the utmost respect for you guys and the lifestyle you lead!

I’m back to a regular diet now, high protein and lots of green veg, I’ve lost some weight all ready and look less bloated all over. I will try out keto again some day but with much more research and planning and preparing.

Lots of love as you continue on your journey. Thanks again!

You may want to take a look at this article. The point being fruit juice has almost as much sugar as coke and more calories!

From the article

juice could actually be playing a part in childhood obesity. Many parents believe that because they’re giving their kids “healthy” juice, they don’t have to limit the amount. The truth is that fruit juice contains a high amount of sugar in the form of fructose. Your body cannot distinguish between sugar from fruits and sugar from candy. Once you’ve consumed sugar, it’s all processed the same way

For the record, I have been on this since April. I do not eat pork, I do use some oil to fry but not much more than I did when I used to follow a moderate diet. I do use butter but it depends what. I still use a non stick pan (mostly due to ease of cleaning rather than to save calories). Most of my fats are from cheese and other dairy and avocado and nuts

One more thing, despite the article that I quoted above, the fact that something is or is not recommended by doctors is not something that will win on this board. Most doctors still tell diabetics to have 30 - 60 grams of carbs per meal which only makes their diabetes worse (many people on this board have been able to overcome diabetes following a keto diet, something many doctors will tell you is not possible). While you should certainly consult doctors if the need arises, do not take what they say on blind faith because they are doctors.

The average doctor whether he or she graduated in 1980 or 2010 has had no more than 2 hours of nutrition classes in medical school, most have had less than that. I know someone who graduated last year who had none

One last thing you may want to aware of is anti nutrients in plants. I know it sounds crazy but they do exist

Not all foods all the time but it is good to know about

Best wishes on your journey

Orange juice, or any fruit juice, is loaded with fructose (sugar) no matter how fresh it is and even without added sugar.

If you’re metabolically healthy then there’s no problem eating fruits, but the whole fruits only, not juice as it’s pretty much pure sugar so no good for anyone. But, on keto, there’s no room for fruits except avocado and maybe a small amount of berries. The good nutrition that’s available from fruits is just as easily obtained from eating low carb veggies.

That’s not entirely true. The phytochemicals andminerals that give fruit it’s coloration, are nutritionally different and can’t be replicated with veggies. There are some veggies that naturally are more colorful, and some that have been bred for unusual color (eg purple cauliflower). If that’s “a real issue” is up for debate.
