Well perhaps it was my youth. I just remember being in deep ketosis with little effort. I remember one time I drank a 6 pack of Michelob ultra and it didn’t knock my body out. That’s not my goal it just is an observation. Well I’m going to take suggestions and see what happens
Golden shot theory?
Certainly does not apply to me. n=1 and all.
I did Atkins in the late 70’s with success and again in 2005 with initial success but then stalled and didn’t know snacking was bad.
And finally in 2017 and transitioned over to keto. Had no trouble getting into ketosis all 3 times.
I think a few things after having read the responses…
- the golden shot theory means that it is the time that it will be easiest to achieve ketosis and weight loss
- each additional attempt will be at a point where insulin resistance has progressed
- insulin resistance makes it difficult to burn body fat
Circle around and it is clear why the first time at low carb/keto is going to be the easiest time to be successful.
I would say that this is true in an indirect sense, in that the more insulin-resistant we are, the less carbohydrate we can safely eat without provoking an insulin response sufficient to trap fatty acids in adipose tissue. We do know, however, that insulin sensitivity can be regained over time, if we eat ketogenically for long enough, so (in theory, at least) at some point our carb tolerance ought to rise.
More generally to the topic, Dr. Phinney has suggested in several lectures that once we become fat-adapted, eating enough carbohydrate to become carb-adapted again means going through the same process of fat adaptation when we return to keto that we went through when we first started eating a ketogenic diet. I don’t recall hearing him describe the mechanism for this, however.
I think insulin resistance can be improved but not necessarily reversed to a normal level for everyone. I think it is like everything else… depends on the individual and their personal experiences. Being ketogenic is a great step in the right direction but it has it’s limitations.
I did Atkins in the 70’s, and 2000’s and 2017. 40 years apart. Call bullshit on that theory. Always worked for me.
Tried Atkins multiple times before finally starting for good. Always worked for me, too. After a few weeks, I felt great, with a marked decrease in hunger.
