Getting the boot

Wondering what happens when we get kicked outta ketosis?

Just had a terrific meal tonight with my sister. She just turned 45 and I’ll be 41 in a week or so. We had a keto friendly meal. However the dessert…I caved. Kinda willingly tho–I’ve been wanting to try this dessert. So… Do I drink a bunch of water? I’m kinda disappointed with myself :frowning: I knew, after a few bites, I’d risk undoing the work I’ve done these past six+ weeks…

Any hints on how to handle eating something that will likely pull you out of ketosis?

Thank you!
Joanna

I had the same experience last weekend. I visited family that I hadn’t seen in 20 years. I didn’t mention keto because there was plenty of other stuff to talk about after 20 years. I did fine at dinner, but for desert they served cake that was apparently an old family recipe that it would have been really awkward to say no to.

I’ve been fat adapted for a while and although I didn’t feel great that evening, I didn’t notice any cravings as a result. I noticed a little more water retention, but hay fell away after a couple days.

Life happens. Just get back on the horse and KCKO.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It’s wonderful you had time with family and were focused on that. Most important thing… That’s great to know there were no cravings afterwards. I am concerned about cravings, but I feel right now much the same as I did before indulging, will likely hit the hay soon, and hopefully don’t wake up as a hungry monster in the morning

One item that caught my eye in Jason Fung’s “Obesity Code” book was his advise to live your life while on the keto diet. He wrote about a situation where one of his patients were concerned about eating a piece of wedding cake at their daughter (or son’s?) wedding. His viewpoint was that it’s OK to eat the cake, these are the situations that make life enjoyable/worth living.

My suggestion is to relish the moment, and continue on with the keto lifestyle when you can.

Eating a dessert isn’t murder. You didn’t hurt yourself or anyone else. Just go back to following Keto. You’ve done nothing wrong. Valuable lesson. You’ve learned dessert no longer makes you feel as good as it once did.

Just an additional thought, no need to compensate for the dessert. Just Keep Calm and Keto On (KCKO)!

Just an update that this morning I was happily surprised to still be in ketosis (pee stick confirmed). I’ll look at that dessert last night as an early bday present :gift:

FYI, those are HIGHLY unreliable. Don’t get discouraged if they stop registering ketones. They’re only good in the beginning to see if your body is producing ketones because they show the extras your body is not using. As your body learns better how to use them, you’ll be wasting less. So, they’re not a for sure indication you’re in ketosis.
