Before starting, I went out and bought all this special “keto” stuff at the grocery store - avacado mayo, ghee (still unopened), salad dressings, etc. I discovered that I didn’t need any of it and could eat just clean, regular food with reading labels - meat, veggie, eggs, butter, bacon, salad, mayo, etc. Just started making my own “keto” dressings and much prefer using those. They are full keto - and I know what’s in them. Makes me feel better about what I am eating.
Funny and/or Dumb Mistakes We've Made Doing Keto
This was me. I have a cupboard that I refer to as my alchemist cupboard! Almond flour, coconut flour, whey protein powder, pure cocoa powder, xantham gum, chia seeds, ground chia seeds, flaxseeds, ground flaxseeds and more! I must go through it as much will be out of date.
In reality, I just eat … food! Sure I do cook and use the odd ingredient, but generally, meat, veg, eggs and dairy etc!
Yes, I have my little stash as well. A jar of coconut oil, half used. Ground flaxseed meal. Some chia seeds. I have some almond flour but I use that fairly often. Also some potato starch, which also gets used up slowly.
But yeah, the super-secret “keto foods” have names like: salmon, tuna, chicken, beef, eggs, cheese, broccoli, asparagus, lettuce…
I see magazines. Just because the cover of National Inquirer says “Lose a pound a day on Super Keto™” don’t believe it. Be realistic. Keto is a lifestyle change, not a miracle diet plan. You are probably not going to be a size 8 by Valentine’s Day.
This is not keto, fortunately, but I couldn’t resist:
I had no idea about electrolytes when I started. I was lucky though I had problems with magnesium but it was easy to see (more like to feel, cramps!) and solve with a pill. If my typical low sodium intake could cause real problems on keto for me, I probably would have quit, not knowing what is my problem (unless I was determined and researched a bit).
Later I learned my stuff and I talk about electrolytes if I meet a totally clueless newbie. It’s important to know about electrolytes. Not just on keto, of course. Why do we learn some quite useless info in school but not such important things?
Wow, I guess some people must be very sensitive to that… Or MCT oil is really special? I am quite sure no “normal” food in Earth can cause diarrhea to me (including a bigger amount of spoiled milk, I tried) but MCT oil isn’t that normal. Or maltitol. I don’t remember I ever had it but it’s a very good example of a keto mistake I’ve heard from many people. It easily causes diarrhea in so small amounts it’s a crime some very low-carb chocolates and candies don’t have some warning on them. Newbie ketoers get happy, buy them, like them and eat more than 1-2 pieces as they are newbies, still desiring sweets in big amounts. Or just find it nice and thinks it’s harmless. It’s not.
Many people get diarrhea from fat, sometimes the amount is so tiny I wouldn’t call such a meal a proper snack… I don’t hear that often from ketoers but maybe if someone suddenly raises their fat intake, they can expect bad things.
Be wary about magnesium-oxid. Of course don’t even buy such silly things with a low absorpsion rate, I knew that very well already. But if you bought something because the first ingredient was some way better source of magnesium but it has some magnesium-oxid too… Don’t eat multiple pills to get rid of cramps. I even ate a good pill, by the way but my magnesium level was very low, I still had some pains and lots of stupid pills, they are better than nothing and caused no problem before. So I ate a tad more than the general daily dose (and my better pill).
It was a mistake, I know that now. Probably nothing very serious but as I don’t have diarrhea in every decade and it’s usually barely annoying, it upset me. And I hate the attitude that focuses on profit only, making useless and even harmful products. Or make a half-decent product way worse.
Blimey - Woman’s World claims 22 pounds a WEEK?!
That’s quite some detox…!
Ordered an omelette from ihop not realizing that they add pancake batter to fluff their omelettes unless you specify “cracked eggs”
I binged on Russel Stover’s sugar free chocolate candies and had over 24 hours of violent diarrhea. I was afraid. Lesson learned…for now
That’s what he said. The title of this topic.
Haha, us Brits dont eat biscuits and gravy.
Up North we eat chips and gravy, that’s French fries not crisps
Though obviously not me any more…lol
I thought that was more related to drinking the punch and having the fudge ;>
When I was new to Keto, I didn’t totally do it properly, and I was stupid and bought pills online and Dr.Gunthrie’s protein shakes, thinking they were Keto (and got charged on my cc way more then it said when I bought them, all these cross-border fees were added on) soooo big big mistake, a costly mistake, and I never drank much of it.
First thought
Ordering at Starbucks one of their teas…3x
Not realizing, they add in liquid sugar on some ( have to request don’t add )
Funny thing, I knew it tasted xtra sweet😄
Just thought it was a taste change in regards to my sweet cravings
Oh and
I had too go to court with a friend for his job security clearance forms
Going through the security and metal detectors
When emptying my pockets I did not realize I had my Zip loc tiny bag with pink salt!
Look 100% like some drug paraphernalia
Thankfully I was not questioned

I saw that happen on live pd a couple of years ago. Cop pulled over a guy and found a Ziploc with some pink salt in it. He jammed the guy up good, asking what it was for. The guy said he ate it. I was yelling "arrest him, he’s on the keto!"
Me too, but I keep it in a small grinder that I can screw the top off to crunch on the big pieces, if I want. Looks less criminally if I ever got pulled over and less sketchy in restaurants if I want to bring it in.
biggest stupid mistake for me is letting myself get hungry and being out of my own kitchen and stuck at the mercy of eating out.
I never let myself get hungry now. I plan for ‘what ifs’ and I make sure I take care of myself at all times regarding my eating. Heck if I don’t do it, no one will
Stupid mistake…not being prepared and getting ravenous.
Easy fix on it actually tho so I came thru that stupid time for myself in good form. It was so easy to find excuses to eat crappy cause I didn’t prepare.
I also learned I only get out of a healthy eating change good results IF I PUT in the effort. No effort, no true benefits.
