Eating to satiety versus eating enough

(Running from stupidity) #21

That’s true, but you’re also using a lot of energy just dragging yourself around!

#22

Yeah - fair enough. I should probably bow out of this one.

(Running from stupidity) #23

Nah, you’re quite right, there’s just SO MANY variables.

#24

Yes, also the amount of insulin resistance people can have, simply from the obesity, and years of yoyoing. Voice of experience.

@Iced
Congrats on the progress so far!
I would ask you how much energy and get-up-and-go you have on your current low calorie eating?
If you have plenty, then your body is probably tapping into your fat reserves and using that to fuel you.

On the other hand, tiredness, lethargy, feeling cold, would indicate that your metabolism is slowing down while your body tries to economise on energy usage. If that is happening then I encourage you to eat more to prevent the slow down.

There is a very complicated hormone dance that goes on, and insulin resistance isn’t the only resistance we can get. Glycogen, stress hormones, growth hormones, leptin, etc. etc. They all join the party. It certainly isn’t just insulin that may go wangy.

For what it is worth, my view is that steady/slow loss is more sustainable, less stressful on the body, and easier to avoid regain. Other people disagree, but for me, and my body, I would rather lose 15 pounds a year, over several years, with no yo-yoing at all, than 60 pounds in a year with a following bouncing yo-yo of 10 pounds. Just the way I have learned my body benefits the most. YMMV

Thanks everyone for your input. It has been helpful to hear other people’s thoughts. I am worried about slowing down my metabolism and messing it up any more than it already is but I do have tons of energy. It’s unbelievable to me how much I have. I can now go all day and still have energy left.

Juice: Are you losing weigh or are you maintaining on 3MAD?

(Running from stupidity) #27

Losing, mostly, but the last two weeks were a stressful mess, so the graph gets a bit wonky through that time. Still trending down nicely, though.

I’d prefer 1MAD, TBH, but I can’t eat even close to enough if I do that. So I’m 3MAD most days, and I’m trying a 36-hour fast from after Sat dinner through to having breakfast Monday morning to see how that goes. (Yeah, guess who has been listening to Megan Ramos again

This would suggest that your metabolism is humming along rather nicely

I use Keto Diet from the App Store. I find it good for tracking macros, and I also use it to look up foods and their net carbs (it also tracks calories, if that is important to you)

That’s a great attitude, @Brunneria.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #31

My feeling, reading that, is that you’re fine at the caloric level your appetite is leading you to. I think you were right to be concerned, given your history, but that level of energy says to me that your body has sorted itself out at this point. Unless something changes, I suggest simply ketoing on! :+1:

Just to give an update, for anyone in a similar position and looking for information, I have tended to go back and forth, one day eating a pretty big breakfast to give myself more calories and the rest of my meals eating to satiety and the next day just eating to satiety with no extra big meals. I have lost another 8lbs so it seems to be working. My energy levels have been maintained except for one day, I did feel cold and more lethargic, so I made sure to eat a big dinner with a lot of extra fat and the problem went away. Thanks for all of the advice,
