Dedicated, but failing (Weight Loss)

#21

I will take some time off on the exercise. I was attempting to maintain as much muscle as possible so that my body burned more calories throughout the day, but if exercise is messing things up worse, I’ll give it a break and see that it helps.

As far as just going to a lab, what tests would be important to get?

(Adam Kirby) #22

Fasting glucose+insulin at a minimum. Others can chime in with additional suggestions.

In some states, it’s illegal to get private testing.

However, I’d urge you to find a doctor who is willing and able to get to the source of your obviously physical issues. Several years ago when traveling, I collapsed and wound up in the ER of a local hospital. Tests indicated severe dehydration but no reason for it. When I returned home, my now ex-primary wasn’t interested in finding the cause of my collapse, since it was ‘resolved.’ My endo, however (I’m hypothyroid), not only ran some tests but also referred me to a urologist and a nephrologist to try to find the cause.

My point is that many doctors will not do much if the patient’s issue is complex and difficult to identify. You need to find a doctor who is like my endo and interested in the patient’s well being.

Have you tried an intermittent fasting protocol?
Sometimes our bodies are so deranged that a LC diet isn’t sufficient, an element of fasting is necessary.

No salt?

#26

Sounds so frustrating. Would you be able to see a functional medicine doc? They are able to spend a lot more time with their patients and are more focused on finding root causes to problems vs just writing a script to treat the symptoms. Only problem is insurance does not cover, so there is out of pocket expense for the visit and lab tests. Wishing you the best.

Before I started Keto I was doing intermittent fasting with a three hour eating window, but the Dr. I was working with at the time thought that might be part of what was causing my issues. He said that I was building up an insulin resistance all day, then getting all of my daily calories forced into a small window.

(Lonnie Hedley) #28

Right. Before you started keto. I think the point @4dml made is to combine keto with IF.

(Keto in Katy) #29

I second this. I dropped my doc several years because he was worthless on matters of nutrition and metabolic health.

Found a functional med doc who gets it. We spend more money this way but we get time and attention from someone who seeks to resolve issues, not suppress symptoms. It is a worthwhile investment, imo.

In the states, you can go online to canary club and get your own metabolic testing. Joining the club is free and the prices on the tests are good compared to other labs. My functional medicine doc had me do their diurnal cortisol saliva test - looking for the possibility of a pituitary tumor someone mentioned above since I’ve been keto for a year and lost five pounds.

No additional salt. I am sure there are levels of sodium in certain things that I eat though.

(Mike W.) #32

Most people on Keto need 3-5 GRAMS of sodium per day. I would definitely use more salt. A lot of salt.

#33

I will definitely do that. I had been avoiding any additional salts. What is the idea behind needing extra salt on keto?

(Mike W.) #34

Our kidneys flush it much quicker and we don’t retain water.

(Gina Craig) #35

Try EF, I couldn’t lose a pound until I did EF.

I’m not losing either, and doing everything “right”! I keep cutting things out or eating less of something. Sucks! I’ve had to cut the protein way down to 3 or 4 oz per meal, the protein was raising my BG enough to make me feel hunger. I also cut the workouts out to just a walk or a bicycle ride at a leisurely pace. I’ve learned if I’m feeling starved like I have to eat or die it’s my BG. Something spiked it, otherwise I will feel just a normal hunger. I’m finally learning normal hunger, at 57!!
Do you sleep thru the night? I thought 4-5 hours was normal for me, turns out not so much normal as self destructive.
I’ve been reading a lot about adrenal fatigue and every symptom I have been feeling is explained, all the weight gain, the exhaustion, sleepless nights and why I could never lose weight.

(Candy Lind) #37

Not only do you flush them faster, you need more salt, potassium, & magnesium because those are highly involved in processing fat into ketones.

(Full Metal KETO AF) #38

I think you may just need a tweak in your diet possibly. A lot more leafy greens and low carb veggies. Maybe less protein. More salt and water. Try cutting out dairy for a couple of weeks. Try the intermittent fasting regimen (only eat between noon and 8 pm). I started loosing again after a stall by upping veggies and reducing protein. Also increased fat helped with energy levels and hunger issues. I also started fermented veggies daily which I make myself and I have become addicted to them. And they’re fun to make for yourself. Stuck at 15 lbs lost for
2 months, after the tweaks I have lost about 8 lbs in the last two weeks. I have been on the keto diet for 14 weeks with a total of 23 lbs lost. From 205 to 182 so far. Not much excercise so far, got to work on that! But I have become more active around the house.

Just FYI, this thread is getting on for a year old.
