Dairy Lactose intolerance

(Tracy ) #1

I am newbie and have sensitivity to dairy, I do use Almond milk anyone can tolerate butter or certain cheeses?
I am looking for ideas I can try to see how I do. _

I’m lactose intolerant as well, but can do butter and hard cheeses. I replace milk in recipes with almond milk and replace heavy whipping cream with coconut milk/cream. I’ve made some great dairy free ice creams with coconut milk. I avoid the cheeses that upset my stomach, which is fine because I absolutely adore aged cheeses! There are so many options out there, I really don’t miss dairy at all! Just look for aged cheese.

Awesome thanks!

Check the label on the heavy cream. I don’t believe it contains enough lactose/galactose to worry about, but I may be wrong. Cheeses that are aged a long time usually don’t have much in the way of milk sugar either, because the bacteria that ferment the cheese eat it all up.

But there are two issues here: the first is lactose-intolerance, which results from the inability to produce the enzyme lactase in adulthood (children who cannot produce lactase would never survive to adulthood, of course), a condition common to the majority of the human race. Fortunately for those of northern European or Maasai descent, both populations developed mutations that allow them to continue to produce lactase throughout their lives.

The second issue is a general reaction to various components of dairy, unrelated to the issue of lactose. Many people who can handle lactose still find that they are better off not eating dairy.

Goat (cheese) dairy products might work for you?

Thank you for the information!

My sister and her daughter started keto a few weeks ago. Daughter was not using any dairy as it was bad for her (no idea how or what), but she is now using butter, cream, cheese, creamcheese  with no issues.

All I know is my experience. It’s not pleasant lol. Produces the same results as ice cream. Pain. Torture. Death. Not fun.

I dont do dairy except for
-eggs
-butter
-hard cheese
-goat cheese

I use cashew milk in place of cream

I don’t think eggs are dairy, somehow.

I can do the butters, creams, sour creams and unless I over do it, cheeses. Only thing that SOMETIMES still gets me are the blue cheeses. I think many of us diagnosed with lactose intolerance actually have some other thing going on that mimics it near perfectly. I can also eat (keto) ice cream and many other things. Pre keto I’d beg for death if I ate that stuff without a fist full of lactaid ahead of time.

They are found in the dairy section of American supermarkets.

So they’re dairy for commercial purposes, just as the tomato is considered a vegetable, even though it’s a fruit.

Any “milk” will give me the two minute warning. Almond milk was great in my oatmeal but after going keto I haven’t had it. Hard cheeses, butter, ghee, or any oli has no effect on me. I also add heavy whipping cream to my eggs every morning and never gave it a thought.

Righto, next year I’m putting all the Easter eggs in with the broccoli.

lol… i know… we Canadians also keep eggs in with milk and cheese…

I remember then lesson of not counting how many eggs were hidden inside the house. You will find it eventually.
