This is awesome thank you everyone for the input. We found these daikon radishes amazing in the chowder. We steamed them first and then let it sit in the chowder for hours on low and they just took the flavor of the clams. Amazing and so happy to have discovered them.
Daikon radish
Itās the oppositeā¦Iām a Coastal Georgia Girl that ended up in Chicago for awhile!
I zoodle daikon radish instead of zucchini. It holds up well in sauces & soups.
Check any international market including Mexican or Korean or Chinese.
And Iāve seen it at Wholefoods and Kroger.
Itās definitely cheaper at an international market.
Well if you can get Mexican things, go for jicama/ Mexican yam bean/or Mexican turnip, as a potato substitute. I havenāt tried it scalloped or in a chowder, I eat it too fast. I love to just peel it, slice it up, put in a container, cover with water and add juice of half a lemon or lime. It has prebiotics and is very HIGH fiber. Here is a break down by ozs. and cups:
Carbohydrate and Fiber Counts
1 ounce of raw jicama: 1 gram of effective (net) carbohydrate plus 1 gram of fiber and 11 calories
1 cup of raw jicama slices: 4.5 grams of effective (net) carb plus 6 grams of fiber and 46 calories
4 ounces (1/4 pound) of jicama: 4 grams of effective (net) carbohydrate plus 6 grams of fiber and 42 calories
I tried to make french fries out of one one time. I made them in the oven and apparently let them dry out too much. Might need to give them another try one day. Hadnāt thought of frying them the way I used to fry sliced potatoes or have them like scalloped potatoes. So many ideasā¦
Thanks, Iāve tried jicama but couldnāt really get into it. It reminded me slightly of apples, but it seemed like it never softened when cooked. I have tried the Daikon though because my WalMart used to carry them. I used it in beef stew and it was wonderful.
I found daikon ānoodlesā at whole foods just now, even though there wasnt a whole daikon radish to be seen. I bought them anyway! I may try and fry some like shoestring french fries
Apologies for a bad pic, but I found daikon radish ānoodlesā at whole foods and fried them. Amazing! They are so much like those fried onions in a can. Iām going to top a burger with some later, and just eat some straight now!
OMG!!! I need to try this I love those fried onions in the can! And I could make the Green bean casserole with them! Thank you!
Just avocado oil! I did absolutely nothing to the radish spirals themselves. I did it in small batches so I could use less oil.
More like horseradish. Both daikon and horseradish are stronger the fresher they are. I had no idea about the sweet potatoes, thanks !

Transplant:
Daikon radishes mellow as they age.
I didnāt know that! Good to now, though.
Maybe there a little like sweet potatoes⦠not so great fresh out of the ground, much better aged for a while.
