Containers & tools

I also have a jar fetish–right now I am in love with Weck jars, but when we buy something in a cute jar I just have to save the jar. Driving my family bonkers, especially when I make them eat what’s in the jar so I can have the jar! I do use them, so I have an excuse.

I treated myself to a tiny jar of cheap caviar for NY Eve (to eat over brie as someone on this forum suggested–nom, nom!) and I’m not sure if I was more excited for the caviar or the jar. OK, it WAS the jar, the caviar was cheap and lacked flavor.

Life is too short to eat cheap, flavorless caviar.

Not sure where you live, but Browne Trading in Southern Maine has a very nice, affordable caviar that comes if really cute glass jars.

Still haven’t figured out low carb blintzes. Or potato pancakes. Sigh.

For a blintz substitute, try these:
http://www.lowcarbsosimple.com/2-minute-3-ingredient-low-carb-paleo-tortilla/ or these: https://www.evernote.com/Home.action#n=331b380b-8bee-4d19-987f-4c7468c45e0e&ses=1&sh=5&sds=5&x=tortillas&.

Instead of potato pancakes, I make zucchini or cauliflower pancakes–use coconut flour instead of wheat flour. I make sure to squeeze out all the water from the veggies first!

Do you live in Southern Maine? My daughter is headed to UNE for Osteopathic Medical School which will be quite the adventure as we live in California and she has never been in the snow!

Thanks for the recommendations, @janknitz I will give them a try.

I live in an Austin, TX Suburb now, but I am from Nova Scotia, Canada and I lived in Northern Maine 'Aroostook County" for 11 years.

UNE is a very good school. Make sure she has good boots, a nice coat and good gloves and hat. She will love it. Friendly people.

Hi Kelly, I live in a suburb around Austin, too! Nice to see a local on here.

I live in the Southwest and everything must go in a container – it’s either dry and hot, or humid during the monsoon season, with all sorts of bugs.

I store everything in Lock & Lock containers (I get sets on QVC). They are perfect for pantry items, nuts, etc. They also freeze and I use them for leftovers. They have a silicone seal and keep everything out.

I also don’t reheat anything in plastic, so I also have some of the Pyrex containers with lids for hot foods that I know I’m going to reheat.

Tools: Food processor and ice cream maker.

Re-hashing this older thread instead of starting a new one … so where do you buy your vacuum sealer bags? I have until 3/4/18 to decide whether to get the Foodsaver on sale at (where else?) Costco, but I also want to know the ins & outs of bag material. In meantime, I think I’ll haunt a few thrift stores to see if I can save some pennies that way.

TIA for info & suggestions!

We ordered from a 3rd party merchant through WalMart last time. They don’t seem to be any different to me.

Certainly not musts, but I love my Instapot for easy, quick, throw-it-all-together meals that taste like they were slow cooked. And my good old handy cast iron pan.

Loving my set of these. Fraction of cost of glass Tupperware analogs, good for Sous Vide, microwave and dishwasher. And if they get pitted, who cares.

I use way more tupperware now and I use these:
