I have given them up. Six weeks is about right for the cravings to stop. I am at about three months I think. It has reduced mt carb cravings as well, not just sweets. it is interesting to me how my taste buds have changed. A waitress accidentally brought me fries the other day and I tried one. It tasted like dirt! So I never have to try that again.

Thank you. I have been pondering the responses here, suggesting that wanting something sweet is a craving. I’m fairly sure it isn’t. I just need to get rid of the salt, spicey taste in my mouth: I should add that I make almost no saliva these days. Just a mouthful of sweetened tea, or rinsing my mouth with something sweet does the trick. I don’t actually need to eat / swallow a dessert.

The more low carb / keto I am the more I just want plain meat and some veg but I do like some seasoning and that then produces the need to neutralise the taste. Unless of course in time my tastebuds also get destroyed, which whilst possible would be particularly unfortunate because I’ve always had quite a keen sense of taste. But at least then it would be easier just to eat less!

How much of a effect is the dopamine response from the food you eat? This would depend on the receptors in your brain. Because of this i would advice anyone to stay away from foods that you have a tendency to eat beyond satiation. When you add anything sweet to most foods or liquids you will eat or drink more then you would have if it was not sweet. So if your goal is to eat to satiation and heal an number of metabolic deceases don’t do sweeteners!

Same for me. Once in a great while I have a head craving, but overall nothing. I do find, however, that if I eat nuts I crave all the nuts. I am amazed at what actually tastes sweet to me now.

(Liz ) #45

I see a lot of folks here who talk about finding it easy to overeat nuts.

Right? Bottled water can taste sweet! It’s wild :smile:

(roxanna) #46

Yes, it’s been my major downfall for a long time, but especially now that I’m trying to be Zero Carb. I call it Zero Carb with nuts, but mostly I’m trying to avoid them!

While I tend to believe it’s possible to survive reasonably well on meat and fat, I’m also inclined to believe that vegetables are very, very good for us. I won’t be giving up my veggies anytime soon!

I have never been crazy about sweeteners or lab created food so when I dropped sugar/honey I didn’t add anything to replace it. I will occasionally have a small square of 80% dark chocolate, but pretty much keep all sweetness to minimum.

When you give up sweeteners you begin to taste the sweetness in life (and your food). :kissing_heart:

Oh lord yes! Once that bad is open, the whole pound is usually gonna vanish. And pecans - among the lowest carbohydrate content for nuts - seem to never be on sale at my local grocery store. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I think he was referring to podcast number 19, where the guest has been ketogenic 18 years.

I’m on podcast number 21, and have been ketogenic 3 years. I love sweeteners and desserts FYI, and have many examples in Recipes. I have an absolute medical necessity to be ketogenic for life, and there’s no way I’d do it without the occasional sweet treat.

Cheryl You just described me to a T! I cannot just eat one of anything sweet. I gave up all sweeteners a couple weeks ago and I feel better. I dropped a few pounds too. Occasionally I will put a spoon full of raw almond butter on a 100% dark chocolate square for a treat. My reese’s nut cup lol

I gave up stevia. It was making me feel bad. Just gave away a 6 pack of Zevia because I always felt sick after drinking one.

(Cheryl Hall) #53

@seekingsimplicity

Hummmmm might have to try that!

We make it work however we have to!!!

I’m not real crazy about the taste of Stevia anyway. So Bitter. The Xylitol tastes best to me but I won’t have it in the house because it’s so toxic to my doggies.

@Cheryl311 Looks great, Cheryl! Have you had some yet?

(Cheryl Hall) #55

@FalliliFerzip

I had a small slice this morning after I posted this - I was fasted since last night so I thought it would be a good time to see what happened. My Glucose was 100mg before I ate it and 1 hour later it was 141mg. So I did get a Glucose spike - not horrible but still a spike. 3 hours later my Glucose was 121mg so it only came down a little.

All this was at about 11 am today. Just took my sugar again and it’s 118mg. All other food today has been carb free - homemade bone broth - fried pork chops, and coffees with kerrygold, coconut oil and heavy cream. Not really hungry and not really having cravings either - so maybe I can tolorate this as a nice treat occasionally - maybe because of all the fat? It sure is delicious.

(Gabe ā€œNo Dogma, Only Science Please!ā€ ) #56

Yep, I was referring to the woman who’d been doing Atkins for over a decade. Was it 18 years? Amazing. I thought it was ā€œonlyā€ 13 or 14.

Enjoyed your appearance on the podcast too though Brenda :slight_smile:

(roxanna) #57

Yes I’ve always loved veggies and have always eaten a ton, so I’m consistently surprised how much I enjoy not eating them!

(Cece Blackstock) #58

Lol! ZCwN :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

(jay) #59

@Cheryl311 that Cheese cake looks so good, it’s a little indecent…:sunglasses:

I made one like that but i didn’t account for my own heightend sweetness sensitivity and used a touch too much swerve. But a hot cup of dark roast and a slice of cheesecake…well heaven has to have something along that line…

(Cheryl Hall) #60

@kreb

It was very good! I didn’t overly sweeten it and everyone in the house loved it - my house of full of carboholics so I didn’t have to take it to work! :joy:
