Cold Showers = lose fat?!?!

(Meeping up the Science!) #23

I am now vindicated because:

  1. I never wear coats!

  2. I take cold showers to preserve my funky hair colors.

Take that mitochondrial biogenesis! Do my bidding - I command it!

(Michael Iafrato ) #24

Cold showers not so much for me but like @Donna I donā€™t generally wear a coat.

I end my shower with 30 seconds on cold every day, itā€™s better than a cup of coffee. But yes, cold showers alone are not going to melt the pounds but are another thing to ā€œstackā€ in your daily routine - lots of little things add up. I learned about this as well from Tim Ferriss (canā€™t recall Podcast, 4 Hour Body or 4 Hour Work Week) based on a well known cold specialist named Wim Hof (http://www.wimhofmethod.com/) - Iā€™ve been doing the Wim Hoff (or my own version) for about 9 months and feel like it has been overall accretive to my health. I know it sounds cooky but if you are into Keto then you are already a fringe health pioneer so do yourself a favor and check it out (ok I found the podcast here: http://fourhourworkweek.com/2015/09/07/the-iceman-wim-hof/).

@bodwest Hey, thanks!!

Yeah, Iā€™ve been devouring up info on this. I think you nailed it when you say ā€œstackā€ these methods up. So far, I canā€™t believe how awesome I feel after. Itā€™s almost like a drug, I stand there barely hanging on the last few seconds being doused with cold water, then when itā€™s overā€¦I want more. Lol

Thanks again for the info. :+1:

@jackieduke2003 Come on, take the plungeā€¦Do it, do it!!

Hahaha. :grin::joy:

(Jeanne Gallant) #28

Not for me either. I do wonder how, snowshoeing in -11c (12f) for 2 hours would compare?

(Jacquie) #29

It can only be a good thing.

(Joel Abdul) #30

@Ladytrekker Try it out! n=1ā€¦Lol. snowshoe, warm up, then jump in a cold shower, and report back . Youā€™ll be hooked :ok_hand::+1:

I purchased this on Indigogo (like Kickstarter) a while back, it has yet to ship but looks like a promising way to burn a few extra calories sitting around with cold vests: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/thin-ice-2-0-a-next-gen-weight-loss-clothing-line#/

(Joel Abdul) #32

@bodwest hahahaā€¦ No way, that looks sweet!

(Jeanne Gallant) #33

I donā€™t know, took about 6 hours to warm up. Iā€™m not inclined to get cold again. Iā€™ll just snowshoe and run in the cold.

(Joel Abdul) #34

@Msvino You down for taking cold showers? Hehe

#35

Hahaha hi  my internet has been shit Iā€™ve just now been able to see these emails!

(Jamie Hayes) #36

I know it makes me feel better. In summer I only have short cold showers anyway - most of the time.

(Christina Hansen) #37

It makes me feel good too, especially in the summer. The real challenge is in the winter, when the groundwater gets extra cold, at least here in NYC. (Cold showers are disappointing in places like Miami Beach, where ā€œcoldā€ water out of the tap is totally not bracing or particularly refreshing.)

Iā€™ve seen ads coming across my facebook page for a cryotherapy study for weight loss in my area. I looked into it and part of the study was to adhere to their diet which was not Keto, so ā€¦ no. I was still thinking of going in for the treatments since they had a special of 2 treatments for $70.

I had found this article which gives some reasoning behind cold therapy.

(Derek I. Batting) #39

If Iā€™ve had more than 6 seconds of cold water at the end of a shower, itā€™s immediately followed by me yelling downstairs, ā€œYOU USED ALL THE FUCKING HOT WATER AGAIN!ā€ :rage:

Anyway, can anyone link some peer-reviewed studies on this? Iā€™m interested even if itā€™s probably not for me.
Thanks!

(Michael Critchfield) #41

I did it for years and loved it. Our current home shower tap is temperature monitored and wonā€™t go below 70. It was better when in the winter it was 49 degrees.
