Banting vs Keto

Banting vs Keto

Both diets are basically the same. My South African Dr. said buy this book ‘The Real Meal Revolution’ (outstanding book btw) because you are going on the Banting diet, I’ll see you in 2 months! Well I enjoyed the book so much I read it twice and also bought The Real Meal 2.0, another good book. My wife and I both jumped into Banting hard, man we were so sick from the keto flu but stuck it out with no cheat days at all. All we had to go by was the Real Meal books and the green list. If anyone new is having a hard time with portion sizes or just doesn’t know what to eat, take a look at the Banting method and lists of acceptable foods. Basically, eat from the green list and dip into the orange list when fat adapted and stay away from the red list. I was told protein portion should be the size of your palm and if eating nuts you should have a closed fist of nuts. We also tracked every piece of food through the Lose it app for 2 months keeping well under 20 carbs a day with great success.

For daily inspiration I checked out the South African Banting Facebook page. It’s fun to see before and after pictures and what funky foods they are eating. They have 1 ½ million Facebook members on Banting 7 Day Meal Plans FB. Caulimash was so big in S.A. that there was a shortage on cauliflower… lol

Here is the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Banting7DayMealPlans/

These days we say we eat Keto as no one really knows what Banting is. I personally have reversed a dozen health related problems through diet alone eating on the LCHF lifestyle. Eating this way has saved my life and I will never go back to eating carbbage. Now if I can only get my siblings, other family members and friends to see the light.
Anyone else get their start on Banting?

Keto vs Banting

Interesting.

Yep, keto (except he has chocolate on the red “never” list - BOO)

The list is wacky for sure, I think they are still modifying it. Bananas on the orange list, should be on the red.

Yes - definite chart deficiency - there should be an Orange “Sometimes” List entry of:

Greater than 85% chocolate (under 20 grams)

  • Lindt
  • Ghirardelli

Most definitely. I watched a video of a guy who tested his blood sugar spike after eating a banana and a candy bar full of sugar. He had a greater spike with the banana.

Hi, Thanks, for the list, very encouraging post.

I like to see how all the dots connect:

Banting. Then Doctors:- Donaldson (1919), Pennington (1940s), Robert Atkins (60s?) all took hold of a LCHF diet.

Eric Westman - was the first physician researcher to take up Atkins’ offer to reseach and validate his clinical practices.

Phinney and Volek - followed, they also went through Atkins work (but had already been doing their own research mainly from a sports / performance perspective).

Many people on this forum refer to Drs Westman, Phinney, Volek. The three co-wrote “The New Atkins for a New You” … but then we have the “The Art and Science of Low-Carb…” books. Phinney coined the term “nutritional ketosis” and I think from there the term “keto” stuck.

I like to know all this history because we can share experiences with each other and gain insights. We don’t have to “hack” our way through it all. And re-invent the same mistakes!

Dr Tim Noakes was taken to court in South Africa because of a tweat suggesting someone go on a low-carb diet. They tried to have his license revoked, but sanity prevailed in the end… Goes to show why doctors can’t all visibly recommending what works. There’s real pressure to toe the line, but sadly this creates a real lemmings mentality.

Nina Teicholz explains all the above very well in her book “The Big Fat Surprise”. She also testified at Tim’s trial.

Yep, same problem.

WOW 1.5 million members. That’s great.

(And yes I have “The Real Meal Revolution”, good book).

(I came in via Robert Lustig “The Bitter Truth about Sugar” and wanted pictures of food in Atkins books and hence found Westman/Phinney/Volek and finally keto. But I have “The Real Meal Revolution”, Tim Noakes is awesome!)

Thanks again.

Can I just say that I love the word ‘banting’. It sounds so gloriously old-fashioned to me (remembering back to Agatha Christie novels where someone avoided being killed by a poisoned cake because she was ‘banting’ and scraped off the icing, lol). Didn’t realise the term was still in such common usage now - predominantly in ZA it seems.

Dr Tim Noakes was front page news in South Africa. They tried to expel him for suggesting a low-carb diet.

He uses the terms “to Bant” or “Banting” but said everything got turned around when he discovered Phinney and Volek. At the time I think they were using the term “Atkins”. So call it Banting, Atkins, LCHF or keto. All are LCHF with only minor variations about certain food items here and there… all are avoiding insulin overdoes and insulin resistance.

But yes, very Agatha Christie.

Ok, that’s funny. It’s a guy’s name that happens to sound like a gerund. Reverse engineering it to a verb of another tense is outstanding wordplay. Well played, Dr Noakes, well played.

As we say in Australia, “this can only happen in America”, but Tim Noakes is in South Africa, so go figure …

(To Google, to Kleenex, to FedEx, to Bant, to keto …)
