Artificial Sweeteners

(Jacquie) #21

‘Oddly, with total abstinence, I have no desire for sweets and find it fairly easy to abstain.’

That’s exactly what I found the year I was AS free and I liked that feeling.

#22

I tested with blood sugar tester. I can also feel the up and down (cool down and heat up, feeling drowsy afterwards and then increased hunger hours later).

#23

Yes, that is the key. Unless you eat NO sugar ever, it is an OK option. It is the waste product from the refinement process so actually does have some good stuff in it too. I would typically use about 1/2 maybe 1 teaspoon in a recipe so the carb count is tiny when it gets shared about to an actual portion size. I do not use it to sweeten, just to impart flavour.

I stopped AS’s on the weekend and already feel back to my old self. Of course, this could be the placebo effect but I’ll take it. I forgot that I did a sweet-free challenge with @janknitz in January (actually I started in late December) and had no problem but went back to using AS’s in February. Not using them does simply things and I like that. Onward!

My favorite AS is Sukrin. They make different types of sugar replacements - including brown sugar and liquid sweeteners that can be used like syrup. I’ve only seen the products sold online. I’ve used the products for baking, cooking, and adding into whipped cream all with good results. And best of all - no after taste - at least for me. I especially like Sukrin Melis - the powered sugar. The Yukon Gold (brown sugar replacement) is excellent in low carb muffins and other baking recipes

i got all excited that there was a “new” to me sweetener…Sukrin is erythritol like Swerve and Truvia BUT the Sukrin brands don’t have any sugar at all (truvia baking blend has sugar) and have more options (brown sugar, icing, and syrups)
i also discovered that i have been misspelling/saying erythritol this whole time! :joy:

Great when you find one that works for you!

Also Lakanto makes a white sugar and a “golden” sugar version, tasty but expensive compared with erythritol. Re: erythritol - someone clever needs to come up with a better name, it’s un-spellable & un-pronouncible, sounds like a body part!

Here’s William Davis’ Wheat Belly site that compares the cost of some AS’s. Of course, he’s making his product look good in the list of AS’s he chose to present to the public.

I am using Steviana, it is the best sweeter with the least amount of after taste.
It is great in my tea and coffee, unfortunately it is only available in the Middle East.

But for anyone in the area, I recommend you try it. Steviana

What about the dawn effect?

(Jacquie) #32

Don’t think so. My FBG were always between 4 and 5, so okay. Still off AS’s and feel fine.

I made two batches of baked goods with exylitol and had an instant headache and feeling of nausea right away. I did not relate it the first time, but now I know.

#34

Have you been using this powder? How did it work out?

I am growing stevia and plan to make an alcohol extract from it when the plants are big enough.

(Dustin Bell) #35

I try to avoid them because they unleash my sugar dragon.

#36

I tried it once and it tasted vile. I think I probably used too much in the recipe but I haven’t dared try it again as it was inedible!

#37

Bummer!

#38

Yeah - dogs liked it though!

We have been growing our own Stevia 20+ years; got the seed initially sent “in a plain brown envelope from CA (since it was illegal in USA)” and we love it fresh, just a partial leaf in iced lime Nestea etc. IIRC big sugar had the ban set up. And, I worked for a sugar plantation at the time! I was doing Atkins and needed something zero carb. Now I do not since I cleansed my palate of sweet craving, with “The Whole Thirty” and then what I assume (since I am not testing BG/Ketones) is Keto lifestyle. We do have Erythritol in pantry, love it (Anthony’s, from AMZN, USA cane sourced, not China corn starch).

I would be interested to hear how this works out for you. I grew stevia once and tried drying and grinding the leaves. The flavor was horrible. Serious after taste, like eating lamb or goat.
