great topic…I like how you’ve pointed out the main issue “whole grains” we’ve all been lead to believe that they are normal and needed…when they are making a lot (most) of us sick and overweight… some people can tolerate them better than others, but over time i think it just gets worse and worse the more we continue to eat them… going Keto will knock out most ( if not all) of those nasty “whole grains” …for us less than normal people with diabetes: keto i believe is the way to go but there are lots of other good reason to choose this WOE… Start now before any problems develop …unfortunately diabetes and insulin resistance is quickly becoming the new norm…type 2 diabetes used to be called “adult onset” but now it’s happening to kids and teenagers…if i only knew what i know now back when i was 25 i probably wouldn’t be in this situation…turn that boat around now.
Anyone else out there who is "normal?"
@ Dianne Willis McCall I tried to comment to your post with just a simple “YES!” -but this app wouldn’t let me! ( it said-body is unclear, is it a complete sentence?) strange! Anyway - way to go! Glad you found this WOE & this place!!!
I’m normal(ish) however easily brainwashed by the health benefits that are promised and the more I learn about the metabolic process the more orthorexic I become
I’m basically in the same boat. My wife, friends and family know I’ve lost weight and that it “works for me” but don’t want to see the science behind it. I think they see this as a vegan type kick, and I’ll soon fall back to being my old self and eating
“normally”. They stick to their weight watchers and “carbs are good for you” mentality. So, I basically keep to myself about it unless they ask me a question.
The truth of the matter is, it is the healthiest way to eat. All of the reputable science says so. Eating foods that basically guarantee you’ll become diabetic eventually, is not healthy and that includes fruits. As soon as I told them about how fruit isn’t all that good for you, they all but laughed at me. I just want to help them be as healthy as I can because I love them, but I’m also not going to force it on them either.
I’m normal, only real issues were blood sugar problems in the morning. I got tired of not being able to say no to sweets and packing on pounds every year. I am not a big veggie fan, I smoke lots of meat weekly, and have had success on Atkins so I switched over. Family members expressed concern of course but after 40 pounds most of them have jumped on board and several are giving it a try themselves.
I would eat a big bowl of cereal in the morning, get the shakes and need protein, starving at 11 for lunch, hungry again by noon, it just didn’t make sense. I have had 1 blood sugar drop in the 4 months since starting and i’m rarely hungry so I feel a lot better and i’m sticking with it.
I liked this -but actually it is sad /but that wasn’t an option.
I have a husband who will eat what I cook -but can’t eat pulled pork “not” on a bun. He is also taking statins… despite me & several of his friends telling him to refuse them.
Tell me about it! This is the only woe that I’ve found that works! I’ve been overweight my whole life with thyroid disease. All I heard at first was “you’re killing yourself”, now it’s “you’re getting too skinny”! Still no one gets on board. I wish my kids would listen, I can’t imagine what my life would’ve been like had I known then what I know now!
Casey, I’m in your situation, although a good deal older. All my adult life I’ve been overweight by 20 to 30 pounds, have no sign of disease and consider myself quite healthy, but do have little “conditions” that come and go.
Thirteen years ago I became convinced of the rationale behind low carb and followed it more or less. Lost some weight and regained it several times. Could never keep it off but also never went over my starting weight. But also never had the science behind insulin resistance, which I assume is my problem.
Since starting keto 12 weeks ago, I have list a few pounds, but only a few (I don’t own scale) and I don’t own a device to measure ketones. I’m on this WOE to drop 30 pounds.
Fortunately, I’ve learned patience in the last 13 years so I’m willing to wait out my body’s resistance to letting go of this fat. Helpful: some of my minor “conditions” have cleared up.
Have you tried making him a pulled pork taco with one of the cheese taco shells?
I would have classed myself as normal. I’ve lost 45lbs through keto, which was the aim. So I’ve never bothered with strips or blood tests.
However I’ve also found that the little bit of eczema I had has cleared up; joint ache has gone; and I’ve stopped snoring and have said goodbye to my CPAP machine.
Keto helps us all in different ways
I was normal when I started. Well, stomach podging out a insy winsy bit but would never have thought of a diet. I was convinced of the science theory enough to try it.
But alas I’m not normal now
Great Post! I actually felt like doing a post like this because I know how you feel. I’m 35, no medical problem’s or obesity and do it for all the benefits it adds to my everyday life.
Starting keto came from my love for experimenting in various areas. When I moved to a new neighborhood i was shocked by how unhealthy everyone around me looked. So i gained some lbs over the coarse of a month (max weight 174lbs) with the goal of hacking my body where in the end I could help others with my findings.
I’ve read up on keto here and there for years but I finally put it into action. In doing so I actually noticed after only 3 weeks that I stopped reacting to lactose, my eye sight got better, my sleep got better, my skin and body order improved, i naturally drank more water etc etc etc. Oh ya and I lost over 30 lbs in that time, lighter that I had been in over a decade maybe more. Finding out over this time about all the the help it does for disease and athletic performance made me lose my mind and want to keep it up and dive in more.
My husband is 62 yo - no medications, works out 5-6 times a week, looks like he is 49 . He does fluctuate 10’lbs thru out the year but after listening to several podcasts - he was convinced ." It’s about being healthy "-!! preventing disease!!! The science proves it!!! Why do we all think sugar and carbs are needed? We have been lied too!! Study the science - many professionals feel everyone should be LCHF!!
It’s the right thing!
I guess I’m normal. Also commented on @Larry’s thread. I’m 24 and when I started I was overweight. I’m at the upper range of healthy weight now, but I definitely still have a lot to fix. I don’t have stats to track like blood glucose, but I was vegan/vegetarian for long enough and ate SAD for the first 20 years of my life, so I know there must be problems to fix. I feel better on Keto. Not perfect yet, but better than off of it. KCKO.
We will sometimes wrap our meats in low-carb Tortillas. They sell them at the local grocery story. ~3g carbs(net).
Good luck! KCKO!
I think the biggest challenge for you is to digest the science and be convinced this is healthiest for you. Then you have solid footing for making the change. I would be interested to see if your depression and anxiety get better. And the 30 lbs. I mean, at this age, you’re PRIMED to set yourself on a good course. Also, if you can get a solid handle on the science behind it, you can put that up as evidence when family challenges you.
Good luck, and let us know what you discover along the way!
@carl, You were looking for another newcomer to interview? As mentioned in a recent episode?
I consider myself “normal” too - I even have had the good fortune/genes to have never really been overweight. I started eating paleo about six years ago and very quickly shed the 5-10 extra pounds I’d been carrying around for years. This year my occasional migraines suddenly became chronic and began taking over my life, and I decided to try keto in an effort to get those under control. It didn’t help, actually! Howver, a trigger elimination diet and/or acupuncture and/or a transcranial magnetic stimulator worked wonders, thank god, and now my migraines have been pretty much eliminated.
So, why keto? I think that, like paleo, low carb is a recipe for a healthier future. Risk reduction is my jam. I’m sort of an imposter here, though; my goal is not to be in ketosis all the time. I’m insulin sensitive and metabolically healthy, so my goal is to get about 50 net carbs a day. It helps me to have strict boundaries or rules for eating, otherwise I will eat a lot of crap like rice crackers. Plus keto food is pretty damn awesome!
Yes. I am also “normal”. No metabolic issues.
Interested in a lifestyle diet that will provide me with preventive maintenance for this body, for life. Would also like to lose (and keep off) those stubborn pounds that inch up year after year (that I lose and find again and again).
In just a few short weeks I have already been liberated from food cravings that for much of my life had control over me. I m sleeping better. The scale hasn’t changed, but my body has, just enough to feel I am on the right path.
All of you inspire me and have taught me so much.
I look forward to the journey as I keto on.
Thanks @carl and @richard for all you have done & continue to do.
I am enjoying the podcast too!
I’m pretty normal in this context…
Through sporadic fasting and even more sporadic exercise, I figure i’m in somewhat average physical health. Like you I am overweight - I want to lose another 10 kilo’s and review how I feel and look.
My energy levels spike and dip far less when I avoid eating in the day. That’s why I eat everything in the evening, though I find the energy dip doesn’t happen at all now, which I have no insight into though I could guess my body is able to manage the food more efficiently than it used to.
Good luck in whatever path you choose !
I did not have success making the cheese taco shells ( or in my case - cheese bowls) they hardened too fast before getting them in shape. It’s not only the pulled pork (without buns - that was just the most recent example) he wants bread for any sandwich. We grew up & he prefers meat & potatoes, or pasta in soup etc… he often will eat what I make & doesn’t complain a lot, but I don’t think he thinks a meal is complete without the bread or pasta or potatoes… makes it hard for me to cook!
