11 weeks keto and feeling crappy. Can someone assess my day and give feedback?

See if they will test the T3 & T4, the TSH level can miss problems happens all the time.

Check out Keto Woman podcast, several good discussions about thyroid issues and other things that happen to women on keto.

Okay, I will request for these thyroid tests and I’ll check out the woman’s forum. Thanks collaroygal.

You’re eating too often and causing more insulin spikes. Your consumed fat % may not be high enough. Limit eating to 2 meals a day in a 5 hour window. Give up the artificial sweeteners, they make you hungry and (debatable as all of the science isn’t conclusive) may cause insulin rises. Commit to walking 1-2 miles a day and walk more if you can. The hardest part is getting out the door so commit to the walk and do it when it’s comfortable. I already have 2 miles today.

Thanks Art. I thought about the insulin spike in the past when I read how people fast for day…impressive but I just can’t seem to do even 2 meals daily. I’m hungry. Today I actually made it to 12pm because I got so busy at work, the days not over yet so who knows how I’ll end. I agree that I need to exercise more. It was a great feeling to do a few miles Saturday and Sunday. I have a treadmill at home so there’s no excuse. I even lifting some weights. Today I’m sure so I’ll pick back up tomorrow. I’d rather exercise than not eat. I appreciate the input and really agree it may be my present sedentary life. That’s going to change!

Just another note about the insulin spikes, to reinforce: you can’t access your stored fat when insulin is high. If you want your body to burn through your fat, your job is to keep insulin as low as possible for long stretches of time. Once your body is accessing its own fat, you’re basically eating! It’s just all happening internally rather than through your mouth.

Thanks Madeline, I’ll try making it to 12-1pm tomorrow. I will seriously make an effort.

(Ellen ) #27

I made it to 12pm before I ate today Madeleine. Wanted to keep you updated. Blood sugar 89, ketones 0.7, and weight 167.2lbs. Feeling good!

Awesome, @Ely you are doing great.

Thanks Susan.

I finally got my labs with my tsh levels. You were so right @collaroygal. I freaking have hypothyroidism. Tsh is now 6.3. Doc wants me to do a thyroid scan before meds but I was shocked. I’ve never had something physically wrong with me before. This “getting old” stuff is not fun! The doctor said “most women are happy to hear this news”. Chauvinist. I was shocked. Never would have thought…thanks for your advice.

This should be a simple fix with levothyroxine or a thyroid supplement. I had hyper-thyroid (Grave’s disease) for many years, but then it went dormant and now I have hypothyroid. Am on levothyroxine. It’s fine with me. If keto can aid or fix it, great. If not, there is an effective drug that can fix it.

Waaay back when I was first diagnosed with Graves, they wanted me to take radioactive iodine. No way. I’m all for Western medicine but not that. I’m not going to kill a major organ in my body, or not be able to have my loved ones use the same bathroom as me for three days. Something is wrong with that picture.

Good luck.

(Ellen ) #33

I’m glad you didn’t do the radioactive iodine as well. Scary. Doc is going to put me on meds after my thyroid scan next week. Did you find that your energy returned after levothyroxine? Did it help with weight loss? Maybe this is why my weight loss is soooooo slow. My CAC is 79 and cholesterol 276 so my labs weren’t the best. Thankfully my A1c is 5.2. My doctor said if I stay on keto I should cut back on fats. I’ve been increasing fat. My head is spinning. Remember when we just ate without thinking? I guess just KCKO and stop b@$tching.

I started the levothyroxine before keto, so I can’t say I really noticed a change in energy, and certainly not weight loss as my eating was out of control. Pre-keto, I was so depressed and lethargic that all I would do was sleep. That didn’t change until after I started keto. I hope you find the medication makes a difference for you.

I should stop practicing medicine without a license, but honestly, I would take what your doctor says about fat with a grain of salt. There is so much science out there about the benefits of keto and how it works metabolically, that I totally trust it. Lab results don’t lie. Even high LDL can be explained. Unless a physician is on board and has actually studied keto, IMO, they are just like laymen and aren’t qualified to give advice on it - they are still coming from a point of the food pyramid, old FDA recommendations and the whole CICO thing.

I’d follow what you have learned/are learning here about how and what to eat. Really. For me, we eat OMAD and get a lot of fat. Even with our fattier meats, I may melt a Tbs. of bacon fat on top to boot. Hasn’t interfered with my weight loss whatsoever, contributes to satiety, and based on what I’ve learned here, actually lowers insulin and promotes weight loss.

Thank you so much Marianne. It helps talking to someone who has been where I am. Your insight calms me. I’ll let you know how the medication works when the doctor orders it. Will be interesting.
