Welcome! Just my experience.

Coconut oil costs a small fortune here. I had never come across it before to be honest. I think I suffer the same as you regarding consuming oils by themselves.

How doesnā€™t this video have tens of millions of views?

I got this video in my you tube video feed and was blown away:

Dr. Paul Mason - ā€˜From fibre to the microbiome: low carb gut healthā€™

What is so impressive about his videos unlike the great majority of videos on such subjects is his presentation of scientific evidence (see references to actual studies and flowcharts). The woohs and ahhs in the audience is something to behold. The other notable aspect is he is presenting here at The University of Technology Sydney, a highly respected place of learning in my home country. This is not some fancy temporary you tube studio where the speak has a clear agenda to sell products, books or receive more likes. Dr Paul Mason obtained his medical degree with honours from the University of Sydney, and also holds degrees in Physiotherapy and Occupational Health. He is a Specialist Sports Medicine and Exercise Physician.

His other video Low Carb From a doctorā€™s perspective is also very illuminating.

Dr. Paul Mason - ā€˜Low Carb from a Doctorā€™s perspectiveā€™

This doctor like no other I have ever seen with a plethora of rigorous factual based research has seriously debunked 50 years of supposedly expert advice presented in ā€˜officialā€™ dietary guidelines such as The Australian Dietary Guidelines. Below is the icing on the cake:

Dr. Paul Mason - ā€˜Saturated fat is not dangerousā€™

Lets make no bones about it, his series of videos at the University of Technology, Sydney is second to none with regards to presenting irrefutable evidence in favour of the low carb, low fibre, high fat diet.
This is what people on Keto should be showing their non-Keto friends. No rants, no chants, no virtue signallingā€¦just these videos. if your average person on the protypical recommended official diet canā€™t get the message from these, they never will.

Eating carbs one meal a day? Helpful or dangerous?

Hi gang!
Blood test Results in:

Please excuse the poor quality images and of course itā€™s in Spanish, but I think most readers would be able to interpret them. Any questions regarding the Spanish I can assist. Iā€™m bilingual.

I donā€™t know if based on this Iā€™m at high risk Type 2 diabetes or not. My cholesterol is in the moderate risk category it would seem. I canā€™t say Iā€™m not concerned.

I donā€™t know if these Triglyceride results are good, ā€˜so-soā€™ or ugly. I would appreciate any feedback or comments about the results.
These are my preliminary results after 2 and half weeks on Keto.

I will of course see my doctor in the next week or so to receive her opinion.
I will do another batch of tests at 3 or 4 months on Keto to assess if I will stick with it.

Cheers.

Iā€™d be so greatful if you could check my results and let me know what you think.

checking now

Wow you are doing great. 75.8 for fasting blood glucose is excellent!! I would kill to get mine that low.

Total cholesterol 204, thatā€™s nothing, donā€™t worry about that.

HDL is good - but remember, higher is always better.

Trigs at 107 are also good.

For some reason I canā€™t read/find your LDL? What is that number.

What is very important is your trigs/HDL ratio,.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #108

Your trig to HDL ratio is 2.18, anything under two is considered excellent. HDL can be raised by eating more fat and exercise.

(Matthew) #109

Iā€™m confused why it wasnā€™t tested. On the note for service, it only states Colesteral HDL and Colesteral total.
So I take it LDL is important to know? If it is, iā€™m going to have some strong words with my doctor.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #110

I will probably be shot for breaking this down like this, but, LDL, according to conventional medical wisdom, is bad if it is high. LDL, according to keto, is not a problem, and there are two types of LDL. If you have fluffy particles, you are fine. If you use the search function there is tons written about this. I am just surprised because every test I have had done, and every test other forum members have had done, included LDL.

(Matthew) #111

Thanks for clarifying. Wow, Iā€™m going to really put it to my doctor unless she can come up with some amazing reason. I told her I was doing this test as a result of changing diet and and I needed everything tested under the sun. She should have prescribed me that for this test.

You have been wonderful Regina with regards to giving me your opinion about my results. I am really grateful.

I am pleasantly surprised by my results given your opinion and what I have gleaned from the net. I was expecting much worse especially with trigs and glucose.
The way I will approach this is the following:
If my Cholesterol and Trigs donā€™t improve or even worsen after 3 or 4 months on Keto, Iā€™m going to stop the diet or at least modify aspects. Such as add a portion of carbs, lactose, fruit daily and reduce the fat content from high to low and maintain a moderate protein quantity. However, I wonā€™t go back to sugar. It would pretty much consist of the same diet I had before going on Keto except for cutting out the sugar. I was a big ā€˜sugar with my coffeeā€™ drinker. Thatā€™s now gone forever as well as the fruit juices.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #113

Also, if you can have it done, I would highly suggest your vitamin D levels and C Reactive Protein (CRP) which tests for levels of inflammation in the body. Hopefully other will come along with more suggestions. One of my favorite books (in the category of I will never give this book away) is ā€œYour Blood Never Liesā€ by James B. LaValle. He breaks down every test, low high, and most importantly ideal numbers. Suggests supplements, lifestyle changes - you really understand your numbers. Pretty much for everything he recommends cutting down on carbs to improve numbers.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #114

Iā€™d watch the fruit - that drives up trigs. How long have you been doing keto?

(Empress of the Unexpected) #115

Oh, Sorry, you just started. Ok, another word of advice - I waited, on the suggestion of knowledgeable forum members, for six months to have my blood tested. Apparently the numbers get all wonky for the first few months and especially as you are losing weight. Three or four months might not be the time to do it. Are you really worried that this diet is unhealthful in some way?

(Empress of the Unexpected) #116

You can have berries on keto. Why do you feel the need for lactose?

(Matthew) #117

Ok Iā€™ve made a note of those tests you mentioned on my results including the LDL for when I see the doctor this week.
That book sounds interesting. I think if I continue down the nutritional obsessed Keto road, Iā€™ll probably end up getting that book.
Thank you again for all of your advice and opinions. If it wasnā€™t for you lately I would have felt a little bit lost to be honest. Itā€™s a breath of fresh air to be able to converse with someone like your good self. Itā€™s very motivating.
Oh by the way I cut down on my fat oil intake today and replaced it with more wholemeal fats. I felt a lot better in the stomach. I had my biggest fasting today on the diet. I ate my last meal yesterday at 3.30pm and didnā€™t eat today until 1230pm.So thatā€™s 21:3 fasting. I ate again today at 4pm. I wonā€™t eat again tomorrow until I feel hungry. I doubt it will be before 12pm. Iā€™m definitely getting less hungry between meals. It really is satisfying and liberating to not be so hung up on when to eat or being dictated to by my body.

(Matthew) #118

Iā€™ll look at fruits with low carbs and sugar if I change my diet. Iā€™m currently not eating any fruits and havenā€™t done so since starting Keto a little over 3 weeks ago.

(Matthew) #119

Blueberries? Strawberries?..Lactose I mean a natural yoghurt in the morning.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #120

Itā€™s not a keto book - it is for anyone interested in their health. However, the author does recommend cutting carbs to improve health markers.
