January Group Fast
Starting Thursday January 17th through Sunday January 20th.
The Ketogenic Forums monthly group fast, ZornFast, always starts the third Thursday of the month and runs through the following Sunday.

This month’s group fast.

I started practicing monthly fasts February of 2016. I still gain great benefit.
Zornfasts are normally the third week of each month.
Join if you’d like, we’ll support each other here.
I always do a water fast. (water/ black coffee & tea). The definition of a fast is open to your interpretation and needs. Some will need to do a fat fast. There are benefits to that type of fast as well. I fast to target visceral (organ) fat and to promote autophagy. Fasting also releases HGH for muscle growth. I follow Dr. Jason Fung. Matter of fact, his book "The Obesity Code " is what started my venture into fasting nearly two years ago.
Because of the ketogenic diet I am no longer diabetic. Fasting managed to further improve my health dramatically since I have included it in my health regime. It has increased my insulin sensitivity.

You may want to include this drink during your fast (or some version of it). I drink 2 bottles a day while fasting.

It is very important that you check with your doctor before consuming Lite Salt, as it contains potassium. Do not over consume Lite Salt! I normally only drink two bottles of KetoAide a day and only add 1/4 teaspoon Lite Salt to each bottle. Do not supplement this with additional teaspoons of Lite Salt! That’s too much potassium! One 24 ounce bottle of KetoAide contains 290 mg sodium, 350 mg potassium and 75 mg magnesium

Do you know any of the tricks that can keep you from breaking your fast earlier than you would like? There are several. One is make sure you have your salt on point. Measure out a teaspoon and a half in the morning (this equals 3450 mg of sodium) and take pinches throughout the day. Make sure you hydrate. KetoAide has helped quite a few people. Try not to watch movies or TV that have food commercials. Try not to go into stores or smell food if you can help it. If your stomach growls drink sparkling carbonated water, this helps a lot. And one more thing… caffeine can suppress appetite. Use coffee or tea. Green tea has special properties, it contains a component called catechins that actually suppress ghrelin, the hunger hormone. Use one or all of these strategies and you should be able to fast longer. Remember, fasting is more psychological than anything else.

I find it more physical, as I’m still getting a bit cold while fasting. Iodine and eating more have helped, but not cured this (yet; seems to be improving). It’s also psychological, as if you decide to end your fast, you end it.

I’m going to try for 4.5 days starting Sunday evening, 1/6. Can’t do the weekend, so I’ll end probably Friday. Also, I can no longer workout during these extended fasts, so I’ll end the fast so I can begin working out again.

I’ll be in. Indeed, I’ll probably be ready to start my third EF of the month by the 17th! Should be my third 3-day fast.

I think I’m in!! I say think because I’ve been so weak lately. But right after Christmas I did a 32 hour and a 24 hour in quick succession because my fasting glucose and A1C have been creeping up… fasting glucose was 126, and 149 two days in a row just recently, tested before bedtime and the next morning. SO UNHAPPY. I have been sticking to keto only food all through the holidays. My A1C creeped up from a victorious 5.4 to a sad pre-diabetic 5.8 in three months. This right after stopping my 2k/day metformin dose after hitting that 5.4 dwon from an 11.4 in a year. I have been diabetic for 12 yrs… so maybe my body is still on a bit of a roller coaster before leveling out? I was really sick before I started keto just a year ago so I’m thinking I have a LOT more healting to do still, and a lot of EFs to help me get there.

I’m going to read Dr. Fung’s fasting book this month to help my mindset. When my mind is strong I have nerves of steel and can power through the fasting no problem. I just ignore all those hunger signals, but I have been so week these past 5 month, I only do 16/8s basically every day, done eating by 2 pm every day, and that’s just not cutting it.

I am currently fasting with Eve and Megan. How long do I I need to refeed if I also want to join the Zorn fast?

The Zorn fast is officially the third Thursday through the following Sunday of each month.
Unless you’re talking about the Zorn fast in the IDM community. That one starts on 14th of January through the following Sunday so you would have three whole days to refeed before the 14th.
Whenever you do two back-to-back extended fasts at least two days of refeeding is important. Two meals each day, eating fat to satiety EACH MEAL and a proper amount of protein is recommended.

This can vary according to how much body fat you still have. Also you may want to help ramp up your metabolism by eating a very rich fatty meal before you start your fast. These periods of being cold and low energy can be fixed. It takes time.

Are you weak all the time since being keto? Or are you awake during a fast? Or both?

Not sure if you’re asking about being weak (as in hard to complete the fast), or awake…? I’ve done 3 five-day fasts, a whole bunch of 24 hour fasts, and a couple in-betweens, like 32 hours, 48 hours. It’s just hard to make myself go past the 24 hour mark now… I give in and have some coffee with HWC (200cal). I won’t drink it black because it’s too bitter. It’s just mental, plain and simple. I used to be iron clad, now I’m whimpy. Blegh.

I’m fascinated with autophagy. If you don’t mind me asking, do you think it has worked for you over the last three years, as far as tightening loose skin?

What’s the consensus on the minimum amount of days for it to take effect?

Starts hour 18 to 24 until you eat. Protein interrupts autophagy. It is a scale, not an on/off.

I didn’t start fasting until 2 years ketogenic so IDK.
